The movie does have its charm. I guess I was a bit of a snob about it after reading the book. I had a vision of Zorba and Quinn played him a little rougher than I had in mind. Oh well.

Sorry, cmac. Haven't seen the movie, or read the book. But...seeing the title, all I could think of was this:

Which is an amusing little song to me. Only know about it because I've heard my dad play it a few times before.

I'm sure the movie did some good on the world stage. That clip is a good one. I just didn't think Zorba would have that kind of coarse laugh. Silly I guess. I used to think I was going to somehow be part of a remake of Zorba, the movie. Oh yeah . . .

Might happen who knows, but it would take a miracle for me to be involved in it. It's common, I guess, for people who really dig a book to be disappointed with the movie. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest hit the mark for me, I read the book first. Ken Kesey, the author, is said to have not liked it though. Oh well.

The other big movie made from a book by Kazantzakis, "The Last Temptation of Christ," was also a disappointment for me. But getting anyone to play Jesus is going to be tough, and Willem Dafoe didn't strike me as a good Jesus. It was the first book I'd read by him - it was sort of hip book to read back in the mid 70s among dilettante spiritual seekers. The last chapter was a trip. (dude, I felt like I was on acid . . . ) The Greek Orthodox Church forbade Kazantzakis to be buried in a church cemetery on account of the book.

Maybe I'll watch it again.

Speaking of Last Temptation of Christ, cmac you a Townes van Zandt fan? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xXvZ3f7Z1A

I "discovered" this dude when I was watching Breaking Bad (best show on TV) and they had a cover of one of his songs by a group called The Be Good Tanyas. He died a while ago but he wrote some beautiful music before he died. I dunno why he's not as popular as Dylan and the like. Maybe his songs were too moody

Townes van Zandt is my "hero"; if you like Townes check out Guy Clark.

lol oh? Interesting..........what a book.

I HAVE been wanting to see "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"...but only because Jack Nicholson is in it...and I have a soft spot for him. Hahaha. He was a GOOD Joker. I dunno...sometimes I just don't want to read a book. I do enjoy reading! But sometimes I rather watch a movie.

I hate to admit it, but I don't read full books, novels that is, of fiction much any more. I do read short stories now and then. Movies are quicker and sometimes effective at getting the author's intent across.

I just happened to see "Cuckoo's Nest" again a few weeks back on Satellite. Incredible movie. It pulled the rare hat trick at the Oscars - all 5 top awards, IIRC. The role for Nurse Ratchett was turned down by several top actresses before Louise Fletcher accepted it, and she won an Oscar for it. She nailed that role.

Cool song. I wasn't aware of it. Van Zandt was good all right. And anyone who digs Kazantzakis like that is OK in my book.

Jorn - Guy Clark: "LA Freeway," heard it from Jerry Jeff Walker. Just Yahooed him, oh man the stuff you didn't know:
