You think that he would take an SL600 for a trade?? My dad would be pissed if I did that. heheheh..

Actually, the plan is to drive it until it dies, and then put it into storage. Establish my profession, and then create a 600TE/TV12, or a 360TE or a 400TE. Those are just hopes and dreams that I would like to see 7-8 years on down the road.

i think they may have actually done some fake converts in the 1930s. but it came back in the sixties. i remember the dodge dealer in indy advertising "white hat specials". it was a clever scheme pawned off as an upgrade. in actuality they took cars with bad lead joints at the connection between the roof and body at the back, which if botched took a lot of time to correct and glued on the vinyl top and charged a couple hundred extra. detroit at its best back when the furrin cars had not made much inroad yet.

i know many folks who thought when the vinyl tops got tattered thought "i will just peel it off sand it down and paint it." good idea, but they invariably find poor metal under the vinyl top. rust a lot of times too.

my nephew got a car from his grandfather (not my dad) his dad's dad... he was fixing it up. a riviera buick i think. one day he was racing along the interstate and the padded POS vinyl top just popped right off like a big hat.

My parents bought a brand new Olds Cutlass Supreme, ordered it from the factory loade to the gunwales.

It was a real pretty car, for its time.

The vinyl top was impossible to keep clean, it had a textured surface that attracted dirty like a magnet.

Then it beggan to rust under the vinyl. We did not know about it until the rust came out from under the top and spread tot he rest of the roof. As tom said, the surface under the vinly was rough looking and in bad shape.

That car was a POS, but real pretty to look at.
