Finding a quiet place

Yesterday I'm driving home with the top down and all of a sudden I hear and feel this vibration in my car. It's a little scary so I change lanes to pull over and see what's wrong. Well I realize it's the car behind me and it's his music.
He pulls up next to me at the next traffic light and it is so loud that his trunk lid is vibrating with the music.
I am thinking to myself …wow if that hurts my ears imagine what it is doing to them. Well after a couple of more traffic lights I get to my turn off to home. When I get home as I unload the trunk I can hear one of those bullet bikes over on the next street and a siren in the distance.
Now I am in my house in the kitchen and I can hear screaming outside …..
The neighbor's children are in the pool.

So now I am thinking to myself where can I go to get some quiet?
Where are those quiet places?
Where do you go to read, study or just to think where it's quiet?

I can think of two places that I have been recently that were quiet.
The Bok Tower and gardens in Lake Wales, FL

And the beach at Talbot island state park.

So I am wondering…
Is it quiet where you live?
Is it quiet in your Mercedes?
Do you have a place that you can go to have quiet?

Scott

I know exactly what you mean. It seems to be the curse of our age - noise. Technology has apparently made our lives easier at the expense of added noise.

From my own personal peeve - the idiotic leaf blower - to crappy cars with aftermarket 'racing' mufflers, noise is creeping in all over the place.

Fortunately, I am lucky enough to live in an older neighbourhood with large lots bounded by forest. It's quiet enough in comparison to other places I've lived and there's a beautiful trail in the forest I sometimes jog through when the weather is nice. I take walks there as well - so peaceful and quiet - nothing but the rustling of leaves in the wind.

I find myself drawn to Grace Cathederal on Nob Hill. I was raised catholic, and am no longer religious. But since I was a young boy singing in the choir, I have found a strange source of peace and solace there. I think it is stemmed in my deep passion for architecture... and this cathederal holds an omnious, yet comforting noise of silence that allows me to digress into a quite place deep inside my soul.

There are also quite a few other places that I find serve me in the same way. The Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park -my favorite spot to sit when its raining. There is a tea hut here which serves hot teas, that rests atop a pond- perfect for listening to the rain drops hit the water.
The park near the Berkeley marina with all of the random metal sculptures embedded into the hill sides. The park sits on a small peninsula. A path leads to the very tip which extends out into the bay. At the very end there is a large wooden log where you can sit and watch the entire north bay- the golden gate bridge, the sail boats, and the fog roll in. Nothing but the silence of a breeze from the bay.
There are also quite a few small rivers, that turn into brooks and lead to lakes in the area that are accessible with a little bit of hiking.

I have been so busy lately that I have nearly forgotten of these places that I like to go! Just thinking about them puts me in a different state of mind.
Now I know what I must do this weekend.

My quiet place is more a function of time than place. My house is a patio home, the second house off of a major street, and about two miles from two different freeways. During the day it's always noisey, but at about 3am it's very very quiet on my front porch.

Randy, BHF looks like heaven to me.

One of the advantages of living in the desert is easy access to places absolutely devoid of humanity. I can walk out my front door and be free of all traces of civilization within 20 minutes.

Thats why I go as far offshore as possible, as often as possible. Nothing like putting the throttles to the wall after leaving the channel and just waving good by to all the BS on land.

Quiet place? It's in my mind. Comfortably massaged with time and a good bottle of scotch.

Howdy All,
Work. On most Sundays and holidays only one other person is there and that is security. The dogs and I have 640 acres to ourselves to chase jackrabbits.
