Anybody been there? Or know anything about the place

Anybody been to Modoc County, CA? It is in the upper NE part of the State (200 miles north of Reno). Reason I ask is I saw the place advertised on TV, called California Pines. They are selling home sites dirt cheap and I think it may not be a bad idea to buy something out in the rural CA and may even move out there and do a semi-retirement in a few years. Considering what I can get out of my house in the D.C. area, I think I can live rather big in some elks infested Indian territories.

Wonder what your thoughts of the place are.

I've been to the area, have some friends in Alturas. I like the area, but then I'm the type who dreams of living in a wall tent and living off the land. It's sparsely populated, though that's changing. Small towns. Not a lot of employment opportunities. Carefully consider your attitudes and outlooks. It's not an area known for it's acceptance of yuppies, political-type liberals (as opposed to just old retired hippies), or rich city folk comin' in and buyin' up all the land then putting up a bunch of "No Trespassing" signs.

Are you talking about the land hawked buy Eric Estrada? Check with the locals, oft times they're not overly fond of "hollywood" types moving into them fancy developments, thinking trees are for lookin' at, not logging. Deer are for hunting... Not feeding...

Gotta get back to work, but I can offer more insights later. Or, meet you in Alturas in Oct for a meal in a good Basque resteraunt.

That is exactly the place.

I called and requested more info. I look at different places to move to since the housing bubble in the D.C. area is still going strong and been thinking about cashing in. My house has appreciated 70% since I built it in 2000. I am thinking if I sell the house, I still pocket at least $400K after paying off what I owe. That kind of money can live like a king in elk infested area and not have to work like I do any more. I think I will be content flipping hamburger or work in a local 7-Eleven. If they even have one there. Or occasionally drive to Reno to try out my luck at the Blackjack table.

I've driven through there a couple of times. It's a bit dry and sparsely populated but pretty in spots. Some semi-forested areas here and there.

Its a big move. I don't blame you for wanting to cash in. Keep in mind though, after a week of flipping burgers, you may well ask yourself: What the hell have I done?

It is a big move and I have put some thoughts into this.

I have been divorced for 3 years and have not dated once. I live in a 5 bedroom house with my little dog. I work in any extremely stressful industry and though the money is great, I travel extensively every week. At times I wonder why I keep up with this rat race, and who is it for? I have no kids from my 15 year marriage. Heck, I don't even have any family member. I keep hearing people talk about spending more quality time at home and enjoy life, that is what got me thinking about cashing out. Move to a cheaper area, and not having to keep doing what I have been doing for the last 20 years. My ideal place would be on the beach, much like everyone's dream. But beach living is expensive. If I live in a rural area, I still can keep all my toys, probably still have a big house. Yes, I am accustomed to lots of space and don't see myself living anywhere less than 4 bedrooms (not that I need it). To achieve that, the only way is somewhere in Wyoming or Montana, or this place I am thinking about. The thoughts of walking to the stream in the evening and do a little fishing with my dog along side just getting more appealing to me everyday. Not to mention all the open space to let my SL stretch its legs

Who takes care of doggie when you're gone?

Seriously, I hear you on the stress factor. We lived in NoVA several times when dad did Pentagon tours in the Air Force, and that area can be a nightmare. I don't blame you one bit for wanting out!

I pay doggie sitter when I travel. Don't have the heart to put the little girl in the kernel knowing she is caged up and all. Dog sitter is very expensive but she worths every penny of it. Like I said, she is the only one I have to provide for.

I would take a few weeks off. Go out there, check the place out, talk to the locals.
