Performance Products

I am going to buy a bunch of products all at one time to restore my '87 560 SL and want to buy most, if not all, from one vendor, hopefully for a volume discount. For that reason, I plan to use Performance Products, who I have used before on small items with success.

The two most expensive items I will purchase are a new soft top (German canvas) and new leather seat covers. I have a local trim shop that will do a quality job on the installation for a reasonable price on labor but they are high on the "parts" end. I guess that's where they make their money. They are willing to install whatever I purchase for the same labor price but won't guarantee the fit unless they purchase the parts. I want to save money but not at the expense of a poor quality job.

Question: Has anyone bought a soft top and/or leather seat covers from Performance Products? Were you pleased with the quality? Do seals come with the soft top or will I need to purchase those separately? Thanks in advance.

Glenn

Many people have debated this question before. It was found that performance products makes a good quality soft top. They fit snugly, but i dont know if anyone has used one in the long term. And also, contact phil at the top. He is awesome, and it helps support the site.

Anyways, I cannot recall, but someone bought one through a website that makes tops for German Cars. Apparently that was also a good quality top, that fit snugly as well.

Make sure that they give you a current price quite on ALL the items you order, and find out if they are indeed in stock or are going to be drop shipped. The catalog price and the actual price can vary greatly, I lamost learned the hard way.

Try Millers in California, they are honest and tend to have more personal service. The other place sell parts for all kinds of domestic and import cars.

I ordered a wood steering wheel for my W126 a little over two months ago from Performance Products. The first one they sent was very used with cracks on the back. The second one was in good shape. They charged my cc for both even though they admitted knowing they sent a bad one. I did finally get credit for the bad one. They also were running a special at the time for a free wood shift knob with the purchase of a steering wheel. The shift knob has been on constant back order and now shows a late August ship date. I called and they admitted they didn't have the knobs in stock during the special. This is illegal. Bottom line, NEVER AGAIN! These people are shady at best!

I am with pig on this one. I used performace for the first time since they are a sponsor on the other board. What a bunch of idiots, customer service is not their forte. I ordered new floor mats and center caps for my 98 sl500. The mats I am pleased with, but getting 4 center caps that were not broke or the wrong finish took over a month and a half. I am going to use a 10 off coupon they sent me for some soft top cleaner then I am done with them. I can't imagine trying to order a part for your engine or something like that if they can't get the right plastic center cap.

I should have added that they shipped the WRONG steering wheel. This was after calling them and getting their assurance that it would fit. I had to order an airbag from German Potomoc Auto to make it all work!

I bought a exhaust downpipe for my 300D from them. It looked like Forrest Gump's welding class project. Never again.

I agree with Justin. Call Phil first. I hear a lot of positive feedback about him here and he does support the forum. Businesses support things like this forum do it for a reason. We owe it to them to at least give them the first shot at our business.

Yes go with phil that guy is awesome. Bobterry recommended him and gave him a call and knew exactly what I needed when I explained the problem. I think the hydraulic cylinders were 129 each shipped.

Do searches (on this site) for SL convertible top lots of information; you can even find covers on eBay.

Performance Auto of California is extremely expensive.
