I'll tell you what... with a few marathons under my belt, I can assure you that, overall, the better distance runners are "older." A lot of it is mental -- willing your body to keep running after the 22 mile mark or so. That's where I fall back and start having to take walking breaks. Invariably, one of the older guys on my team passes me up at this point... then another... and another. I can keep up or even outpace them for 3/4 of the run (not that I am fast, by any stretch), but they are just able to maintain their pace throughout and keep right on running through any mental obstacle. My hat's off to marathoners. I don't think I've ever finished one w/o tearing up a little bit at some point; those guys and gals are awfully inspirational. Before you give me a hard time for admitting that, YOU pass the guy with the running shirt dedicated to a deceased wife, or long-passed fellow Marines, or a disabled family member. Better yet, try to keep pace with this guy without balling like a baby: http://www.teamhoyt.com/

Oh well, biking, swimming, walking, and the occasional wind sprints will have to do. Every now and then, I can pick up and sprint and damn, that feels good. Joni Mitchell had it right: "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone....pave paradise, put up a parking lot, ooooh she bop bop, ooooh she bop bop...
