I'm sold.

I've also heard good things about the Mitsu units.

Ebay seems to have quite a few units. Anyone tried those off of there?

per,

go to froogle.com -- but first, go to all the major mfg. sites and see exactly which you have. there are A LOT of different ones. Some have two fans on the out-side unit, others have one fan, but 2 inside units...

Also, measure how far the inside unit will be from the outside unit so you know if you need a longer line-set.

Good Luck,

Pete

I recently had an addition (sunroom) constructed off from my livingroom. Having used the largest 110/120v window unit for years in the window that became the doorway to the addition, I needed to replace it. I went with the mini split dual. Though it appeared that it would have been a DIY installation, I opted to have it installed. The convincing factor was with the addition, the building inspector was popping in looking for licensed compliance issues. Remote control, quiet and handles the entire first floor. Possibly it helps that the house was built in '85 and is well insulated and tight. No regrets other than I wish when I had the house built I had included a complete central system.

Any inspectors 'popping in' at the Sovereign State of BHF better damned well be bulletproof. Anyway, I'm convinced that this mini split is the way to go on my cabin. Of course, there aren't many other a/c options at this point.

I'm still comparing the various units and their features and some things are a bit confusing. First of all, why the HUGE difference in cost between a 11900 BTU SANYO (cool only) at 16SEER at $1344.00 and the 12000 BTU Ambiance with 10SEER at $737.00

Both have SANYO compressors, the SANYO system does include some features like a built in condensate pump (which I don't need) and air ionizer (hmmm..). Sure it's efficient but, at damned near double the price, it would have to run for years to amortize the additional cost.

I'm leaning towards a 9k BTU Ambiance for the bathroom area and a 12000k BTU Ambiance for the living area.

At first glance the difference appears to be SEER rating. Not sure which state you live in but here in the PRofCA you can get rebatesthrough the utility companies for installing the higher seer rated equipment. It's the only way you'll even come close to recouping the extra expense in a reasonable amount of time. Does the ambiance unit heat as well?

No rebates through the rural electric cooperative suppliying the juice to us so the additional cost of the high SEER unit simply isn't worth it.

There are Ambiance 9k BTU and 12k BTU heat pump units. I'm not going to use them however.
