Squirrel Attacks Anger Winter Park Residents

POSTED: 8:49 am EDT August 11, 2006
UPDATED: 9:38 am EDT August 11, 2006

Residents in Winter Park, Fla., are angered over the city's response to a squirrel that attacked at least seven people this month, according to a report.

The squirrel attacks happened at Winter Park's Central Park over the last several days.

A 3-year-old boy was bitten by the animal several times and has a two-inch wound on his leg, according to the report.

Another child was reportedly bitten on his calf and a man sitting on a park bench was attacked by the squirrel. He suffered a bite and scratches on his arm.

The attacks took place between August 1 and August 4.

Some people now say the attacking animal should have been captured sooner.

One citizen said he captured the squirrel under a bucket after it attacked his friend. He said he released the squirrel when county animal-services workers failed to arrive after two hours.

City employees captured the animal this week.

Winter Park received notice from the Florida Department of Health Epidemiology stating that the results on the squirrel were negative for rabies.

The squirrel would have been fine if it had kept taking its meds.

The heat

It was probably just irritable because of the heat. We all get that way.

I'm wondering if some people were feeding it and then the ones that got bit refused nourishment. I get a little grumpy when I'm hungry too. If you see me you better feed me....

I just went through a hell of a time getting clear of the remnants of squirrel and rat nests in a the bowels, nooks, and crannies of a guest house I'm remodeling up in the wooded hills of B-town.

I read some wag somewhere claimed that humans were the only critters who soiled their own nests. Well, uhhh.... they must have never dealt with the kind of mess I confronted. Oh man...

A biting squirrel? Can you say 'pellet gun,' ya'all fine residents of Winter Park, Florida?

Someone probably had him for dinner. Squirrel stew, tastes like chicken.

I thought you didn't eat anything but chicken and turkey. Are you eating squirrel now?

Deer are our eco-terrorists. Not only do they eat/destroy everything that grows, we have many a story of smashed fenders, and worse, when they decide to go on a suicide run across your path.

The other week my wife happened upon a county employee who was tracking down a reported wounded deer in our neighborhood. She said "your just gonna shoot it right?"

He said it depends how old the deer is. If its less than a year old, they have to take it in to be rehabilitated!!

I saw one run across 4 lanes of traffic on Lee Hwy (very busy intersection in Va) and live! Made me very nervous just watching it.

Joycelyn Elders would say that we need 'safer cars and safer roads'

I'm thinking pellet gun too. If no one thought along those lines they deserved to get bit - they had it under a bucket for two hours! Why waste tax dollars calling anyone, just kill it.

That's crazy! They should rehabilitate it into some venison stew, regardless of the age. Your tax dollars at work I suppose.

Deer hit me on Weihle Ave in Reston VA about 5 years ago in the old 190e. Ran right into the drivers side from the left. Head hit windsheild and his torso pivoted and dented the rear door in two places. Broke the mirror. It hobbled off somewhere.

I have had several other close encounters- in cars and on the cycle- Definitely dangerous!

Squirrel infestation in a home is a problem I know about. Had some knaw between floolrs in an old home. They set up camp and it's a bi*ch of a job getting rid of them. Here, licensed exterminators can't "exterminate" them. Must capture and release elsewhere.
WTF? They'll only end up as road kill somewhere else

I would suggest the same remedy for the person who spiked a tree as I did for the squirrel and the deer.
