Oh. That's a classic sign of overheating. Is the fan functioning properly? Perhaps the heatsink is not mounted square on the processor? It would be worth $20 to get a new heatsink and thermal paste and try getting it running again. At least the chip isn't fried since it does start for a short period of time.

On the homemade computer people tend to cut corners on power supplies and memory chips. These are two items on which you do not want to compromise.

Newer power supplies put out more amps on one voltage rail over another, I think it is the 12v rail, IIRC. The older computers needed more amps on the 5v rail. So if the power supply wasn't upgraded with the MB the new MB starves for power. I may have my voltages mixed up, but that is the idea.

Google turned up this thread that mentions the rails, just to get you started. If you read about overclocking on that site you might get hooked.

http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/asus-nf2-mobo-use-5v-or-12v-rail-for-the-cpu-cant-remember-vt67312.html

Cheap memory chips are just flaky and will cause random problems that will have you chasing your tail forever. These problems are compounded if you have the power supply problem I mentioned above.

It can be a fun hobby to build your own computer but it is not likely going to save you money, or time.

especially today. when one can get a decent computer for 600-800$. i'd still build mine. i've built over a dozen machines. my most recent is a AMD Athlon64 X2 based machine. When it was running it was quite powerful but as of late the motherboard died (2nd time). So I've fallen back on my older builds an Athlon XP 3200 and a (2x) Althon MP 2000.
