He's just come out with a new one entitled "I know you got soul"

The blurb reads, "It's hard to put your finger on exactly what gives a machine "soul" but it's there in the heroic failure of Concorde to change the world, the mystifying faith of Count Zeppelin in his flammable airships, the deadly simplicity of an AK47, or the splendid pointlessness of the Dreadnought battleships.

\In "I know you got soul", Jedremy Clarkson celebrates the planes, trains and automobiles that matter to us anjd tells the stories of the geniuses, boffins and crackpots who put the ghost in the machine.

Gotta start looking for that one on UK ebay one of these days...

The cover photo on the book, BTW, shows a new Rolls Royce Phantom.....

Jeremy Clarkson is a brilliant man. He has a degree from Oxford, and is one of the most respected persons in the automobile world... Jeremy Clarkson is one of my heros.

Clarkson on music, driving and Mercedes...

"I don't like foreigners at the best of times, but whenever I hear even so much as a snatch of Elgar, the mild dislike becomes a deal more pronounced. And believe you me, the best place to be at such a time is behind the pencil-thin wheel of a Jaguar.

If you sort of half close your eyes, you can imagine that deeply sculptured bonnet is the prow of the HMS Victory, the nose of a Spitfire, the protruding snub of a Challenger tank.

If I find myself listening to Elgar while driving along, in, say, a Mercedes, I have to get out and sit on the grass verge until it's finished. When you're in a Mercedes, you can only listen to Strauss or Wagner or something that makes you want to bludgeon your way around the Soviet Union, smashing it into small pieces.

I know you got soul

Yea, got this book last christmas as a present - pretty good read.
Occasionally Top Gear magazine includes a freebie of the musings of JC,
his writing style is funny -see also the car reviews he does for the Sunday Times. I think he statred out as a journo for some regional backwater paper
in the UK, and his father-in-law won the VC (the UK highest military honour)

I know what you mean. I like my E430 enough, but it doesn't have the same feel and presence as the old 420SEL. I don't think that can be replicated.
