Modern Times ???

Has anyone else heard the CD of the title above by Bob Dylan ? I was never a B D fan, even from his Rollin Stone days, but the Modern Times CD has really grabbed me. Any other imput ?

If you pass the bong I'll probably like listen to Dylan, too. It's a damn good thing he writes good songs. Imagine what it would be like if he wrote "Oh Mandy".

The lyrics take a few times to understand what he is saying,,, but the music is VERY addicting.

Okay, I apologize for the flippancy. I have not heard that album yet but I have heard other people said it was a remarkable piece of work, his best since, "Blood on the Tracks" at least. I am a complete Dylan fan up until "Blonde on Blonde." Then I get sporadic. Every once in a while over the years he has done some truly beautiful work, at least as good (and often better) than his first few albums which made me a fan for life. Songs like "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" or "Black Diamond Bay." or "Hurricane."

Also speaking of new releases, I understand John Prine's new album is a good one, too. One of my friends, an anti-Bush nut, said it's anti-war themes and songs were as good as anything Prine did in the 1960's. Prine's 1960's songs in that genre still hit the mark dead-on. It's funny, I got to be a fan of Prine's when I was in the USN during the Vietnam adventure. I wasn't much of a Vietnam War supporter back then (nor now) but I wasn't especially passionate about it. But Prine's lyrics and melodies were freaking works of art. Some of my buddy's back then, C&W fans and pretty conservative, were suprised to hear me listening to old-timey sounding C&W music. They were thinking Hank Snow or something ... until they listened closely to the lyrics. Many of them became fans despite the political disparity.

I love many of Dylan's songs... as long as someone ELSE is singing them!

I think he is one of the greatest, most poetic songwriters ever. I also think he is one of the worst, most unbearable singers ever.

I love that album, Pete. I love all of Dylan's stuff even though I am amazed that somebody who sings the way he does can be so popular. Oh well, he's not alone in that.

Speaking of great singer/songwriters, anybody here listen to Bruce Cockburn? Great lyrics and a much better voice than Dylan, that's for sure. Cockburn is a Canuck and hasn't reached the level of popularity here that he has up north. Check him out, though. He's good.

Haven't heard the entire disc yet, but just a few I downloaded.
I have beed a Dylan freek since Hard Times in NY Town, (early Bob),
and honestly not too impressed with the 3-4 tunes I've heard from this one.


Still " a bad Bob Dylan song is better than a good day at work...!"

I'm not a Dylan follower, but speaking of the Stones, has anyone seen their recent Big Bang tour? I saw them about 3 weeks ago, Unbelievable performance. They jammed for 2+ straight hours doing alot of old great classics, some new stuff too. Mick is still the showman, Keith is better than ever on guitar, even did a solo song. Better show now than 20 years ago. Those old guy's are the best rocknrollers around, see them if you can.

Speaking of concers, my son and his wife and daughter just saw Elton John in concert in Pittsburgh and said it was without a doubt the best concert they had ever seen. He played for almost 3 hours and seemed to really want to give the audience their moneys worth.

Well I would rather listen to the Byrds sing Mr Tambourine Man than Dylan sing it, so I see your point, and it's well taken, but I don't mind the singer performing his own songs - nothing bad about Dylan himself performing "subterranean homesick blues". It depends on which songs you afre referring to, I think

But...he is also going to be one of the most unpleasant/borderline nasty singers you 'd ever want to face in a concert. (He's a legend in his own time and a legend in his own mind) Only Sly & the Family Stone and a few others are more indifferent to/contemptuous of their audiences.

Dylan has been through some changes we would rather forget (Slow Train Coming, etc) but his early works, pre 1967, show him to be a musical genius of the first order whose fame in rock history is assured. He is truly one of the all time great rock legends

here is another thing mike and i agree on!

i remember when his song about hurricane carter came out. i really liked it and went out and bought the album. i am not sure i was able to listen to the whole album even once! his vioce is just too irritating.

his persona is too much for me too. i think he tries to be wierd on purpose to draw attnetion.

his writing though on some songs was really great.

Not to sound cruel but if you aren'y listening to Dylan because he doesn't sound like Paul McCartney you are missing out on a true genious.
No one does a remake of any Dylan song better than Bob. Try listening to the 30yr concert from Madison Square Garden. All star tallent everywhere, and they are TRYING TO SOUND LIKE DYLAN as close as they wish they could!!! Neil Young screws up the lyrics on Takes Alot to Laugh.....

It is like a second year art class trying to copy Picasso paintings.

Not just a great songwriter, a MASTER of the ARTS.
IN the same vein as Socrates, DaVincci, Dylan........

Again, nothing against the Byrds, but if you listen to the Byrds sing Tambourine Man then you never get to hear Subterranean Homesick Blues
