Being fairly new to the world of large animals and, in particular cattle, has it's moments. A couple of months ago one ol' cow developed mastitis and wouldn't let her newborn nurse her. So, we penned them both, started feeding the calf with a tube and milking the cow. She was in rough shape and it required using a long, blunt infusion needle to aspirate the milk ducts and take some pressure off her udder. Once she was cleared out, she milked pretty easy for a range cow...of course, she was in a squeeze chute. The first time I milked her it startled me just how warm her udder and teats were. Looking back, I don't know exactly what I was expecting but it sure wasn't that...

Ok. I learned my lesson. No more getting people to read my threads by hinting about titties.

And, being a card-carrying breast man, I most certainly did see that show.

That was called "The Standard of Perfection" and was up in Maine. Most of those were dairy cows IIRC. The thing I got a big kick out of was watching all those cows walking to their individual stalls in the parlour without any guidance from bipeds.

Two years ago, if you'd asked me if I was going to raise cattle, I would have said hell no! But since then, I've learned that they turn grass into money a lot faster and more efficiently than any tractor ever will and, I've come to truly appreciate them for what they are and their gift from the Maker.

I use loctite PTFE sealent paste, in a glue stick type of contianer. works great.




At work , we use a goop caled "Jomar Seal" as it dosnt harden in the can, and it great for all the fluid power in the shop - I HATE those old pipe-thread cylinders. Everything should be SAE, and use those nice, new O-ring seal connectors.

I fight hydraulic systems all day at work. Be sure not to overtighten (usually the first mistake, esp. with pipe threads) and use a good sealent. Teflon tape usually works great in situations like this. be sure you wrap going WITH the thread, as to not strip some of the tape off when screwing it in.

I can highly recomend Jomar seal - I love the stuff. I'm not sure where one can find it (it's a product of MI) but we get it across the street at the hydraulic shop.

Interesting enough, a cylinder we just had re-done (stripped shaft) is leaking, so much so we'll have to send it back, Luckelly the MB dealer is right next to the cylinder shop (MB of st. clare shores.) So I dont mind taking the drive (and getting caught in "traffic")

I know that is the right answer... but you have no idea what a bear it is to get to the valve. But it'll be easier to get to it now then when the valve is on accessible from behind. So... I'll do it now. I'll pull the 3" brass nipple and and put a 5" galvanized... I liked the idea of the brass on brass, but those nipples are just too darn thin and crappy made.

That is unless you tell me otherwise.

I deal with transmitter tubes that use DowTherm SR1 Glycol mixed w/distilled water in a 50/50 ratio - if anything can find a leak, it's SR1...

All threaded fittings in all my transmitters use Teflon Tape - the same stuff you buy down at the hardware store for about $1.25/dispenser...

If you put it on right, don't cross-thread the fittings - you should have no problems or leaks...

If you do have a leak, the tape is a heck of a lot easier to "clean up" and re-apply than the "dope" or paste...

And the added benefit is that the tape isn't an issue with liquids being "potable" or not...

And it's capable of handling better than 150° F. temperatures - I've had the "cooling fluid" up to 168° F. and the tape didn't weep or leak a drop.

Teflon tape or teflon dope is not a sealant! It is a lubricant used to reduce friction in a tapered thread joint, allowing a higher degree of tapered contact surface., which makes for a better seal. You probably have a leak because the tapered threads are mis-threaded on one or both of the fittings involved.

If you want a seal, use Expando. You will never get it apart again, but you will never have a leak again either. Expando can be purchased at any industrial fitting supply house.
