Cell phone numbers to open to telemarketers in 11 days
By CityBusiness staff report 2006-11-06 7:56 AM CST NEW ORLEANS — The Federal Trade Commission has authorized the release of all cell phone numbers to telemarketing companies Nov. 17. Some mobile numbers will be charged for these calls depending on the plan. The Federal Trade Commission has established a No Call list to register your cell phone number. Registering blocks telemarketing calls for five years. You can register either on your cell phone or on the Internet. The telephone number is (888) 382-1222. You must call from the cell phone number you want blocked. You cannot call from a different number. The Web site is www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx.• |

That e-mail has circulated on the web for several years (albeit different enactment dates, differing legislative bodies, etc.)!
Considering that you would get a toll charge for each of these annoying calls, I don't see how anyone would approve such legislation. Btw, when I got this e-mail years ago, I immediately went and filed my families' cell numbers to that website, only to find that they will remove cell phone numbers from the list. Also, if you haven't registered your home numbers lately, now is the time to do so...especially if you've noticed a steady increase in those dinnertime interruptions!

The website is legit. I don't know about the cell phone threat but I got it a couple of weeks ago and didn't take any chances, stuck all the cell phones on just to be safe.

What threw me this time was that it came from a friend who hasn't bought-on to previous iterations. I think what suckered him was that it had a NOLA Times-Picayune dateline. If it said, "NY Times" I would naturally have been suspicious of it's legitimacy. Kuan, you wouldn't believe the size of my soft underbelly. B |
