I'm the new guy.

Hey everybody!
Just purchased Mercedes #04 for me.Wanted to join up with this sight, and all of you,to talk Mercedes, with people who know, and love them as much as I do.I just purchased an almost new 4,500..yes,only 4,500km,on it,1988 560sec,AMG,Euro car. She's got the big motor, very little chrome, factory lowered, all that.Very rare car actually.Anyways,I'm Nick, from the beautiful state of Ct.I've owned Mercedes for about 10 years, currently have a '79 300cd,an '81 300cd,turbo.and an '89 300ce,as well as this newest addition, the '88 560sec,AMG,Euro.I just wanted to introduce myself to you all.I'm a major Mercedes enthusiast, and will jealously defend them against almost any other make of car.I will be participating in the first real U.S. "Cannonball Run" this year,in the car,and hope to atleast place. With 399 competitors against me,I hope a Mercedes wins,if not my own.It just cost me $10,000.oo,to join the race, and it will be on national t.v.I need you all behind me.If you haven't heard about,or know anything about the race yet..(or just plain don't believe me),go to:www.thegreatamericanrun.com all doubts you have will be dismissed.I just want some more people standing behind me,so I can put the other 399 behind me,come race day.

Where are you leaving from? Can you put your location in your preferences so people can see where you are from? I hope you have a good radar detector.

Howdy Nick

Welcome Nick-

Looks a bit like the Interstate Battery runs (sort of), but with any type vehicle allowed. Old or new.
It also looks like a lot of fun and adventure, for sure. Have a great one - and best of luck to you.

It would be neat if you could take a laptop with you and perhaps post a day-by-day for us to follow. Those evening parties may have you a bit busy for that though.

I wish I had the time for a run like that.

I also wish people would stop referring to those events as “RACES”.

Hey guys I will be bringing the laptop along.I will be documenting the entire thing, and posting constantly.I'm not huge party guy,but will have fun at them, just the same.I'm planning on the top of the line radar detector for the trip, and a c.b. radio.I will be leaving from the NewYork location. There are four starting points.NewYork,Washington,Atlanta, and Miami. It will be 2900 miles from all of them, due to routing which will be handed out at each check point. The pre final party will be in Vegas where all will converge, and run off the final leg of the trip to L.A. from there together.Any of you are more than welcome to join up,if you can fund it.This will be a bench-mark in my life, and I plan to compete yearly,if it will be held yearly (we'll see what happens with the first one)I plan to make mods to the car,but don't know what exactly yet.I want to get another 100/150 horses out of her if at all possible, but a turbo is all that comes to mind. She's already exceeding 340 horses,on the chassis dyno,at the rear wheels.I'm looking for a turbo,or twin turbo set-up for her.Anyone have any ideas on where to get one,and have it installed properly.I really appreciate any help.I know I've got enough for the main part of the journey, but if some moron,in a lambo.blows my doors in,on the lasty stretch,I'm through.I was going to use my Countach for this thing but I need a real car, that is reliable enough.

You just bought a 4,500km 560SEC AMG! OMG that is a rare and pricey car, that’s what dreams are made off. Please hope you don't plan on driving this museum peace across the country? I’d drive something more “disposable” like a new E55!

Still sounds like a fun race, I want to Gumball badly some day.

Good idea. You’ll need the extra 100/150 hp to be able to “obtain an average 61 mph over the entire 2900 mile route.” Not to mention that last 270 mile drive with everyone else into LA.

Did you not understand: “A target time has been set for each stage of the event (achievable without breaking the speed limits), and the winner of the event will be the drivers of the car that get the closest overall time.”

Skip the radar detector. Get the CB for those periods when you’re bored out of your mind. And get yourself a nice clock, and a GPS or two.

I have to wonder what and where these are too:
“The winner of The Great American Run, in addition to claiming the coveted world title, will also win a brand new 500bhp car.”
-and-
“...at a prestigious LA venue.”

If you just want to blow through the course like it’s really a race. Leave NY on the 2nd or 3rd. Save the 10k for gas and bail.

Better hope that last leg from Vegas to LA doesn't fall on a Sunday or you won't be hitting the speed limit. And, the SBC Sheriff/California CHP keep a good watch on that stretch. Lots of accidents so be careful. You want to have fun but stay in one piece.

I know in that respect its kind of lame. But I wonder if thats just legal talk and if people really have fun?

I mean when you Gumball you ignore the speed limits, run from the cops, bribe the cops, drink hard, party hard, beat the crap out of expensive cars, hang with questonable girls. But its all done in another country so its cool!

I’m willing to bet that the “SBC Sheriff/California CHP” will be escorting that train of cars to the “Final Night Gala and Awards Ceremony at a prestigious LA venue.”

I’m thinking it’s much like the Interstate Battery/Great American Race. Where very accurate speedometers and clocks are a must. Most of the real work is done by the passenger.

Not to mention. I don’t think there would be anything illegal about saying: “Come be part of a group of 400 cars that are going to drive from 4 points on the east coast to LA as part of a race (or rally).”

But then - When you read about the founder and the history (links at the bottom of the home page). Ya kind of wonder.....

Well. Either way...

I know most of the guys and helicopter services that contract out to a lot of this type work as far as airborne camera crews and such are concerned. They say there will be 40 such crews. Someone’s gotta know something. I’ll call around Monday.
