I can't vouch for the BBQ, but their sauce is kick ass.

THERE ARE NO GOOD CRAP CAKES NORTH OF THE MASON-DIXON LINE.

However, in the Baltimore area there are many " best" crab cakes.
Valley Inn Falls Road, Lutherville-Towson area is pricey ($20+) but very good, Fine Dining..

Best budget buy is Box Hill Pizzaria, Abingdon, MD. About 2 miles north of the Rte 24, exit off I 95. Lousy atmosphere, no beer, or wines, lots of noisy kids, but oh, the crab cakse are divine. ( $10)

I don't know about crab cakes north of the Mason-Dixon line, but I once had some scallops in New Brunswick, Canada that were the best I've ever eaten. I grew up on the coast of North Carolina and ate plenty of them growing up. The fellow that ran the restaurant in NB said the cold water made them taste better. I couldn't argue with him.

dang, youre making me wanna head to austin just for dinner. the vegan pancakes at mothers are to die for. so thats why it made my list. as far as bbq (vegan/vegetarian or not) i grew up in nc, so i love the vinegar based sauce as well as the sweet smokey hickory tomato based sauce too.

I used to frequent Tennessee Mountain Ribs & Chicken on Spring St.
in SOHO N.Y.C.

They also had incredible blueberry muffins, that they put out when you first are seated. yummmmm.

I have to add Whole Foods (fancy grocery store) deli department- they have some pretty good prepared meals there.

I know those mussels well! DW & I used to frequent Bombay Bistro very regularly. A bad experience a few years ago turned us away. I was eating the veggies that accompany the jumbo shrimp special, which is delicious. I bit down on something hard, and pulled a piece of broken glass out of my mouth. I called over the waiter, who called over the owner/manager guy who always stands by the register. I did not make any big scene, just calmly showed him the glass. He made a very meek apology. He did not offer any consolation, discount, etc. Pretty cheesy behavior, we thought.
Found ourselves going back after a while. The food was still delicious, and the service still sucked. Then on one trip I found some sort of rubber like thing in my chicken biryani. We have not been back since.
We now go to Tandoori Nights in Kentlands. It is more expensive, with smaller portions, but very tasty food. The service is great!
I really miss BB's food, but doubt I will go back.

I like Houstons in Rockville. We went last night, had the wonderfull chicken tenders appetizer, with yummy mustardy dipping sauce. Followed by salad, then ribs.

For texmex style, Rio Grande in Bethesda. Best chips & salsa I've found, and Camarones Brouchette to die for. Fajitas are great to. I just wish they offered frozen margarita made fresh, rather than the ones out of the slurpee machine.

Favorite Pizza joint is Zios in Gaithersburg. I don't know what exactly makes the pizza so good, it's like no other I've had.
