my shooting experience today

well its the weekend after christmas and my little brother has been itching to try out his new 870 express 12g , im dyin to try my scope, slugs, new clay thrower, and the mossberg shotgun i picked up this weekend for $70. we got out to where we were gonna shoot got set up, and my little brother shot a 3" magnum slug out of his gun. so much kick it knocked him on his ass. (he wasnt expecting that much). i shot some slugs out of my 20g, they were cool, but i was hoping to do more damage with them. i think the buck shot did more. i got the scope pretty well set on my 22 and enjoyed shooting at a cutting edge i brough at about 60 yards. so i decided i wanted to shoot clays(my favorite). set up the thrower and after about 30clays, the little finger that holds the clays came loose and we didnt notice it. threw another clay and the finger with bolt was gone. luckily i brought my hand held thrower. i found that i could hold the gun in my left hand, throw the clay, switch hands and hit damn near every time. it was a neat feeling being able to throw them myself and then hit them. we shot 100 20g between two 20g shotguns, 250 12g between 2 12g shotguns and about 300 .22lr between 3 .22's. when i looked at the inside of the barrel on the 20g i started to worry. i looked ruined from the slugs. as it turns out it was metal fouling from the slugs. brass brush and hoppes #9 took care of it. so now i feel better. i just thought i would share my day with yall.

lets hear some of your shooting stories.

I went out Friday to the Mojave with a friend and did some quail hunting; it looked like it was going to be a bust because of the high winds but we found a few coveys and managed 9 between us. All in all a very good day in the field!

Well....

We spent some time this past week hunting hogs and coyotes out of the 530F with a couple of .223s (both AR15‘s) . Then flew down to check on conditions at the “Duck Camp” in De Leon. We thought about staying and hunting (with shotguns) that evening, but found we could knock them down with rotor wash a lot easier.
Anyone know the rules on that one?! I’m thinking they probably aren’t in our favor.

Howdy All,
The dogs and I have been out hunting the last 3 days. Saturday the dogs did exactly what they have been bred to do for the last 6000+ years. They ran down a jack. Nice BD gift, too bad they decided it tasted real good.

Well, this isn't much of a story, but I went out shooting this morning. It was raining lightly but I didn't melt. LOL I shoot 120 rounds of 40 cal. and 200 rounds of 9mm. I wanted to be the first shooter of 2007 but someone beat me to the club by a half hour. Maybe next year. Jay

My son and I burned 1350 rounds of good old 22 LR during one New Year's day plinking session.

Amazing how much lead you can move with a 10/22, a bunch of high capacity mags and a speed loader

Tarbe, what brand speed loader do you use and does it work well? Loading all those mags is really starting to kill my thumb. Jay

I have a Butler Creek that we use on the 10/22 mags. Probably loaded at least 5,000 rounds through it in the year I've had it. Works well for us!

We also have several of the HKS "speed loaders" for the Mark II Ruger clips. They hold the thumb button all the way to the bottom of the mag so you can just drop the shells in. Worth their weight in gold!!! I put nearly 1,000 rounds through the Mark II in one day last year...could never have done that without the HKS loaders.

Sounds like some real father son bonding time. Keep it up!

For those getting into shooting with the kids - I recommend Rogue Chipmunks.
Single shot little replicas of the full size thing. Not plastic. Real Walnut stocks. Various calibers and stocks to choose from.

We got our daughter the .22 when she was 4. She now shoots the 17-HMR and her little brother shoots the 22. The .22 has a red-dot. The 17 has a 3x9. Both with bi-pods and slings. The kids love them.

The 17 (foreground) looks bigger than the .22, but it is not. Both are 30” long and ~2.25 lbs plus the optics and accessories. The .22 has a solid gold trigger thanks to HRH Prince Al-Waleed (long story). The kids like having one up on the gold Browning triggers. The 17 has the stock aluminum trigger that’s been filed and polished. Original Rogue triggers do leave a bit to be desired. But - Nothing a little file and polishing wont take care of.

All I have done recently...

A few days ago I looked out the window to see a flock of starlings in the backyard (I live way out in the country). Dropped a shell in my NEF 20 gauge youth singleshot, and felled three of them as they flew away. I wish I got more, next time I'll use a 3 or 3.5 load if I can find one.

My son used his Chipmunk from about age 5 through 8. I recommend them, too.

My son is 14 now and has probably got more shooting under his belt with rifle, pistol, shotgun and bow than most adult men. I'd guess on the order of 10,000 rounds and counting.

I grew up in love with guns, but was completely on my own as my dad never owned a gun in his life. I always vowed my son would never lack something to shoot and the ammo to go with it. Turns out shooting and hunting have given us many hours of fun together.
