maybe.

i was good at the tight part a few years later.

football is just so destructive to your body. i discouraged my son from playing it. we are too small anyway. he was pretty fast and might have played a safety postion but as a freshman he (and i) were pretty small, not really big enough til senior year.

Yeah, it's a high price that a lot of guys pay for a small bit of low budget glory on a high school football field. You read about serious injuries all the time -- paralyzed, etc.

B-Ball even has its risks. I broke my leg playing in a pickup game when I was 25. Steel pin, operation. Whew.

My high school sports were swimming and water polo. I was also an NCAA varsity athlete my first year at St. Louis U...rifle team of all things.

I must admit I haven't worked out in about 25 years, and it's starting to show.

Oh man, I was quite the fitness buff up until about 5 years ago and I'm a little concerned about the downhill slide. It's a lot easier to slide down that hill than to climb back up.

Times a' wastin.' Get busy, me!

Pushups work amazingly well for increasing the size of the chest. Especially if done on an incline.

Same! I'm relatively skinny, but for some obscure reason I'm really, really good at arm wrestling. I love it, it's my hidden talent.
Mid laste year a bunch of American exchange students came into my pub, there must have been a good 20 of them, and saw me arm wrestling a couple of friends, who I duly beat no bother. One of these lads, named Wyatt from Kansas, saw this and challenged me - he was evidently used to winning. He sat down looking very smug, his arms and hands about double the size of mine. So we sit, tense up... and he pushes. The look on his face was priceless; I swear I almost burst out laughing, there was no way he expected that to happen! So we sat for a little over 12 minutes with him pushing and jerking my arm about in an attempt to get me down. Eventually my arm from the elbow on just went completely numb, and I dropped. But dear Lord did that get a round of applause: some skinny English kid nearly beating a big, burly Yank.

in hemmingways novelette "the old man and the sea", there is a story mentioned in passing about the old man in the story. in his youth he was an excellent arm wrestler. one night in the bar a very muscular black man challenged him. they battled all night and into the next day when the old man (who was younger then) finally prevailed.

if you have not read this book, you owe it to yourself to read it.

if you have read it before, you won't regret reading it again. i have read it at least four times. the first time i read all night.

its setting is cuba.

I try to do 30 a day. 3 sets of ten and I get one of my kids to lay down on my back. The heaviest kid is just over 40 lbs.

all through junior high i did as many pushups as i could before going to bed each night.

i got over fifty, but i didn't touch my chest to the floor.

pullups are excellent too.

i now wish i had built my upper bod less and my legs more.

Theres a bunch of guys at the gym like that, 250 lbs and their calves are smaller than their forearms. I can't work my legs because the knees. Another good practice is doing something, I used to throw the football around the park, and run around and all that jazz. Works all the muscles and even after hitting the gym 1-2 hours everyday I still got sore from it.

Interesting stuff! I'll have a look when I next get some time. Unfortunately my dad keeps unloading reading onto me in an effort to educate - I'm currently juggling Philosophy for Dummies and The Happiness Purpose by Edward De Bono.
Thanks for the heads up though, I'll definitely keep an eye out.

I knew a guy like that. Could beat guys bigger than him routinely.

That stuff can have a dark side. I saw a video once of a guy getting his forearm snapped from the exertion. Course, these were really big guys.

to be good you use your entire body. so a little guy who knows his technique can beat a much larger guy who does not.

Precisely, Tom. The trick is lock your shoulder in place and use your feet to anchor, whilst twisting with your torso.
cmac2012 - the other dark side is people bottling/punching you when they lose. It happens in England, a lot.
