Did anyone else see the story and get a real creepy feeling when watching it as if there is some really sick underlying psychology involved?

I found this piece:

It does seem a bit "off" somehow.

My daughter, OTOH, will never be alone with a boy more than a bullets length away from me.

One wonders if the logical extension of the practice is honor killings.
I don't think it would creep me out so much if it was a mother/daughter event.

However, I "asked" for my father-in-law's permission to marry his daughter. Was there some sort of "ownership" involved there?

I would never ask a child to partake in some funky ritual like that....on the flip side, I think that it's good that fathers and daughters are at least discussing sex, rather than sweeping it under the rug, as it's been done for so long.

Communication is a good thing.

I didn't see the story but this reminds me of that nut job Warren Jeffs who married all those young girls.....also reminds me of arranged marriages. Very creepy.

I did the same thing and in retrospect, I think it did concern ownership rights. My father in law walked my wife down the aisle when we got married and answered the question, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man" with "Her Mother and I do". Nobody objected to the exchange of a girl.

Do you think that a "Purity Ball" is a new ritual, or some form existed previously?

BTW, I don't "own" my wife.....she ownz me.

Agreed 100%.

I think that asking for the woman's hand in marriage is a fine tradition.

I, however, was more interested in the rest of her.

Her family could've kept the hand for all I cared.

Drumroll please....

My daughters and I talk, about all kinds of things. My job is to educate them, not to indoctrinate them. Once I have passed the knowledge along, what they do with it is entirely up to them.

OTOH, I have told the boys they have dated what I do for a living.

That usually took care of any unforeseen, or foreseen, problems.

I think you're right. It is a very short distance between the two. Has anyone read anything about the biological psychology of this? Are there other animals in which the male parent is obsessed with the sexuality of female offspring? How did this evolve and what is its purpose?
I can see it if and when women are commodities. The father is preserving the value of his property But this only makes sense if viriginity is of higher value than non-virginity. Why do humans value viriginity so much? Are there example of other animals with virgin cults?

I suppose that there may be two basis for this, one biological and the other economical.

Biological--to make sure that only one's biological material is being passed along and that one does not consume valuable, and scarce, resources to preserve another's DNA line.

Economical--pretty much the same as above, plus it is a device preserve that property does not pass (through inheritance) to the "wrong" DNA line.
