I was thinking of rudimentary virigin cults, something like a special focus on female offspring as they approach sexual maturity.

I agree that there is much less of an emphasis on female virginity in our culture nowadays even though we still have the virgin Mary. But these balls obvious appeal to something in human beings.

I would imagine not....animals are more concerned with the basics like survival.

This is not to say that there aren't social interaction in many animal communities, but not to the level of reasoning required to suggest cult-group obligation. In other words, it's not "inbred" in us, so why would it be instinctive in other animals?

i never gave it a thought. just seemed like a quaint tradition to me.

when my oldest daughter married, she had a bit of a quandry as she had lived with her mother since we divorced when she was only about 2. while we were fairly close she also had a step father who was golden to her. so she had us both walk her down the aisle and we said "we do" when the question was asked. big smiles all around.

an ingenious solution to a potentially tricky problem.

unfortuntaley the step father is no longer with us but my daughters certifiable mother still is.

Biological--to make sure that only one's biological material is being passed along and that one does not consume valuable, and scarce, resources to preserve another's DNA line.

Economical--pretty much the same as above, plus it is a device preserve that property does not pass (through inheritance) to the "wrong" DNA line.
