Is it just me or...

Does it seem that Americans are now being...trained to be overly sensitive to every other Religion and culture?? Just going by the media, but it seems almost like a non-stop barrage of bending to the point of breaking to make special allowances to everybody. Should we (Americans) totally forget what we are (a melting pot where everyone is invited) and assimilate to what ever the new faction is??

Or shouldn't the new faction assimilate to what we are? Should we live in so much fear to hope our neighbor loves us?? Or should we wonder why our neighbor is so desperatly trying to get in our house??

Soap Box drama.

I've noticed the same phenomenom.

The ironic thing is that the people that we are bending over to be tolerant of and accepting of, are neither very tolerant nor very accepting themselves.

I read somewhere (I wish I had saved the story) that in some California college (either part of the UC system or Cal Sate system) some students got in trouble for desecrating an Islamic flag or banner.

So it is OK to burn, tear, rip, urinate on or defecate on Old Glory (you know
1st Am protection and all that BS) but it is NOT OK to apply the same 1st Am principles to other flags or banners.

Oh well................

guess it depends on the definition of "overly sensitive".

although i get accused of it here i think, in real life nobody accuses me of it.

Rock & ROLL answer .....

Yeah if you follow the media you will be just that. A follower.

If the media told the US to all put masking tape on their windows in big X's & go to bed at 10PM every weeknight...

after about 3 months, 33% of the country would be doing it.

It's like MIck Jagger sang oh 40 yrs ago....."The man comes on the radio and he's tryin' to get me to smoke the same cigarettes as him......."

& Bob Dylan wrote ..."He not busy being born is a busy dyin'."

It's a typical response to a particular problem. Instead of treating people as individuals and in the same way we'd like them to treat us (Golden Rule says it all), we are overreacting to yet another problem in society. I'm not going to feel sorry for who I am just because somebody else is being mistreated. It won't do either one of us any good..

There was something on the History Channel about the Ten Commandments.

Their final conclusion was that even if you don't look at the TC as a divinely inspired religious document, it is still a pretty darned good guide for living a productive, harmonious life.

So the Golden Rule is still a good guide.

Of course, there is that *other* Golden Rule: He who has the gold makes the rules.

Only if we all play by the rule, it is. Just like communism, it is a good idea if everybody is good and plays by the rules. So, in theory, I agree with it. In practice, it doesn't always pay off. IMO, it is a hope and not a rule.

That makes more sense to me seeing what is out there and how they respond.

The Golden Rule is pretty simple and easy to remember. If all of us were to just attempt to live by that, things would be a lot different than they are now, eh?

Golden rule is exactly the source of discontent. You don't treat Buddhists like you yourself, whatever religion you are, would like to be treated.

I don't get the whole bend over backwards thing. It's so easy to just allow pedestrians the right of way, or letting the snowmobile cross the street.

But since we don't, how is it a rule? Can you expect it of the next guy you meet? If not, it is just a hope, not a rule. When I play football, there are certain rules. Referee is there to enforce it and both parties have agreed to abide by them and the consequences for breaking them. Where is the morality referee in real life? If it works, we wouldn't need police or at least so much police.

Are laws not really laws if there's no policeman present in every instance? A rule is not dependent upon enforcement in order to be a rule. It's a rule to live by, a maxim, a guideline. The Ten Commandments are a good guide to life whether you believe their origin was God, Moses, or someone else.

Besides that, you DO suffer the consequences of NOT following these rules and laws if they are, indeed, valid ones. It isn't neccessary to believe in nor assent to the law of gravity in order to be held to the consequences of disregarding it. WVO? Am I right on this? I THINK I'm right.

Federal hate crime legislation from the early '90s, Counselor Too bad the US doesn't get the same protections that homosexuals and religious types to.

Only 5 of the ten do pertain to real life at the very best. The rest are fluff if you don't believe in the bible. It is only effective if everyone else or most everyone else does the same thing. If I show up at a football game with spikes on my gear and there is no referee, what then? If I show up with normal gear and everyone else is with spikes, what then?

How so? What about No 1-4? What consequences? Gravity is a physical law. Moral codes are more fluid than that. What if I worship other gods? What consequences? Idols? Misuse name? Don't keep sabbath holy? What if I covet things?
