Dusting off the canoes
Spring (break) is almost here. Dusting off the canoes and packing for 5 days on the Green River thru Stillwater Canyon. Hope the weather holds. Can't wait to be sitting around the campfire listening to the dutch oven sizzle and the coyotes howl.

I almost added the canoe to the engineering goodness thread.
Sounds like a blast. Ill be fishing up stream out of a tent from the 13-15 of april with a group of about 10-15 old friends. If you have any doubt what lifes all about, just sit down in front of a fire,.. under the stars,.. with a bottle of wiskey,.. good company,.. and a full belly.

My 3 1/2 yo and I have been paddling 2x in 2007 and I have a 33 mile 2 nighter planned in two weeks with my running buddies. I have a 2 qt. dutch oven that I take on those trips because we take a skillet too and my 6 and 10 qt. ovens are too d heavy. Have fun and be careful! (course you probably don't have to worry so much about the cottonmouths where you are).

Ah canoe camping. Nothing like the smell of burning diapers. Nope, it doesn't substitute for elephant dung.

I think I will end up cooking the meat in advance and do some combining and heating for the main course, and then just cook up some vegtables. I gues I just need to go stare at some big pots and pick up 2.

I use an aluminum dutch oven for canoeing. Haven't bought the food yet. Curried lamb does sound interesting. No cottonmouths, just rattlers and scorpions.
Paddling a WWIII and a Bell Yellowstone. First time with the Yellowstone.

I use the 10" without legs. I use some short sections of 1" copper pipe for legs. It's easier to pack without the legs.

Wow, that is two awesome camping supply links you have now turned me on to--Thanks!! Paul if you are interested, this is the magnalite site: http://www.worldkitchen.com/Magnalite/web/ Disclaimer--the ones I have are all 30 years old or older, and I just checked the prices on the new ones and don't know if they are the same or not, because I paid more for the old ones than the new ones seem to cost. But that could also be manufacturing has gotten better, I don't know. |

Ahhh - The Good Life
I guess with the canoe, you would be more into watching the weight you put into it.
Been awhile since I’ve spent any time paddling. I’m into rowing now. The last project I “dusted off” was this 14‘-6“ skiff. Ed Monk design, with a few personal mods. Nothing says "relaxation after a hard day" like wood-working. Not too good on fast rivers, but a dream on the lakes and slower rivers. One things for sure - Canoe or skiff. Magnalite or cast iron. A nice fire, nice food, nice whiskey, good friends and a calm quiet night with nature is what life is all about.

I'd love to row a dory down the Grand Canyon. I've rowed a 16' raft thru it but a dory would be much more responsive with a more exciting ride.
