on oxy/act setup that is big enough to weld/braze anything thick will set you back 500 with the tanks and all. you can oa weld thing metal, it just requires more heat(more gas). i love to braze and whenever i can get away with brazing somthing rather than electric welding it at work i will. dont let people tell you brazing is not as strong. ITS STRONGER using the right rods.

wire feed/ mig. a good unit will set you back anywhere from 300 to 1000. depending on what you want to do with it. i have a lincoln weld pack 3200hd. i payed 500 for it and an additonal 130 for the argon tank. that is a 110v unit and it does what i want it to. if i need to do thick stuff ill get my stick welder(see above). you can buy cheaper but i dont recommend it. i would also stay away from miller. they say its the best but all my experience with them is they are junk. harbor freight has cheap wire feeds but dont expect to do much with them.

home depot has a book on welding that is very helpful.

i hope i helped you in some way.
I disagree on your estimation on Migs....... I have a Horbart 125 amp 110v (a Miller with gray paint...) and I love it! I can weld quite well with it with flux core wire and have had no formal training. My dad who's welded with stick welders for years and has used several wire units too said it's the nicest welder he's used.... And that's with cr@ppy flux-core wire...... Get some argon and prepare to be amazed......

Everyone I talk to says the only advantage of the lincon's is that they're able to shoot aluminum from the factory (teflon lined hose) where the hobart/millers have to have teflon hose linings added after the fact....

i may be a little off on the prices if thats what you mean. every man to his own on the brand. im speaking from my experiance with miller vs lincoln. ive never messed with hobart, all i know is they are made by miller. we have a few miller machines at work and they are junk. me and two of the other mechanics own lincoln wire feeds and agree that they perform better. as for the flux core i agree, it sucks. i ran flux core in mine for 3 weeks and then i went argon. so much prettier weld. idk about the teflon liners. my buddy tried to use aluminum wire and it kept breaking. most of the time when aluminum is welded with a mig welder a spool gun is used.
