Holy crap! That's EXACTLY what I want. Damn! I'm about $30K short, but if he'll just hold it until Fall 2009*, I'm there!

A Mercedes for a 16 year old? A Toyota Tacoma with around 100K and a complete checkup would be a great first vehicle for a kid that age. Fast enough but not a hot rod and they could use it to help their friends move.

Got to get that work ethic ingrained early.

In a few yrs, so it's not like it's a new SL65.

I'd be very happy passing on the Merc to my kid. It's safe, 4 doors (so insurance isn't out of this world), quick, but not fast enough for trouble (errr... maybe) and most importantly the thing is a vault on wheels, now that's peace of mind.

Hay-ell. A death trap was good enough for me to larn in, it'll be good enough fer my kids. (spits Copenhagen)

You make a good point. A vault like Volvo or MB does have it's selling points.

You want to adopt?

Seriously though. I learned to drive in an SL600. But my first car was a 400E. Very nice car, fun to drive, great power, safe, and not fast enough to get into trouble.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion.

It will be 15 yrs old and have 180K on the clock by then. That's a great car for a kid to earn the privilege of driving by proper maintenance and good grades. It worked beautifully with my older two kids who have never had a ticket. My 25 year-old just bought her first car by trading-in the one I had given her years ago and earning a couple grand down-payment and qualifying for a note without a cosigner. She works with autistic children. My #2 is finishing her sophomore year in university and is on the Dean's List and will be working full-time this summer as a certified lifeguard and counsellor at a series of week-long camps for kids variously aged from 5 yrs through high school.

I'm good with my method of raising kids and am looking forward to your report on your method of raising your children and how they earned the right to drive their first cars.

Oh hey, this is fun.

The man from buzz-kill land.

I agree that the car you describe is a good first one for a teenager. One that old would not make a good hot rod.

I've known families that dispensed new Porsches and the like to their teenagers with less than optimal results.

Do as you wish. I will not trouble the great man further.

Enough drivel about vehicles for offsprings. What about that bad a$$ benz? From what I've read they are hard riding vehicles. Does anyone have one that can comment?

The Swede had one. He loved it (I am guessing).

More firm than an E320, it's AMG tuned after all. Rubber will dictate how harsh the ride is too.

I had fat Goodyear F1's and it was perfectly comfortable.

Your kid is a dog.

That's a good excuse. "Officer, it wasn't me, was my dog!"

I wish I had the money. I'd buy that car, have them do a brake job and drive it back across the country. What can a front brake job run on a E55? $1,500?

So offer him $22k with new front rotors and pads, get temp plates, and drive it a few thousand miles through Las Vegas and a few other places back to CT.

You should buy it Bot!
