Part 1 second. They are obscenely wasteful. They get horrible gas mileage, they pollute more than conventional cars and they are wasteful, especially when there is one single person driving aorund carring nothing but air.

Regardless of what you may want to think, the universal consensus is that SUVs are wasteful polluters. I am willing to bet that 90% of the people who drive them don't need them.

Unfortunately, that's not a universal consensus. But I do agree.

I need a truck occasionally. So occasionally that the rental fee is less that I would pay in insurance for owning one. So I rent one when I need one.

I don't like the way SUVs ride on the highway, and wouldn't have one even if they got decent mileage. The fact that they suck fuel is simply another huge minus. I could afford to fuel one, and I'm sure that you could as well, but that's not all there is to it. I, as you, choose not to feed that particular beast.

I agree, it has not become a general consensus...yet.

I wouldn't have such a strong reaction if SUVs were more economical and if we could make then run on something other than gasoline or diesel.

As long as we are hooked on the oil habit, we will be dependent on foreign oil--just like a drug addict is dependent on his dealer.

I would love it for the day to come when we can tell all of these tin pot countries to:

"TAKE YOUR OIL AND SHOVE IT!"

Can you imagine a day when no one gave a damn about what Hugo Chavez, or that midget from Iran, thought?

So are trucks but you don't seem to hear people ***** about them. Look at the truck beds and the hitches. Most of them are clean and not used.

Edit: OK, you wanna talk real world. Lets talk Real World. I took a hit in my 99 C280 in the driver door. The other driver T-boned me. She fared worse than I did. Now, I could make an argument for her to get a Jetta TDI because she drives 150 miles every day. 50 mpg vs her 30+ mpg, I could make it stick. However, I doubt she will be happy in a Jetta. In fact, I know she won't like it one bit. We drove one around. So, to get this 15+ mpg more, I have to pay a little more to get a Jetta. That is the good part since I will recoup my investment in a couple years. However, the bad part is that she won't like it a whit. Now, compound that with the fact that she will be in a lunchbox with wheels and might fare worse in a collision, her fault, the other party's fault, it don't matter, what is that extra safety margin worth to me? Well, money we can earn again. Body might not regenerate so easily.

I don't like the way it rides either but sometimes, it is nice to have an all around vehicle if you need one. It is not a good anything but it is a good all around vehicle. It was either that or a truck and since I had dogs that I wanted to have in the vehicle and give them AC too, it had to be an SUV.

I lived in a police state. I probably know, more than you do, what is like to live in a police state.

SUVs are wasteful means of transportation. they are not even very intelligently designed.

Any imbecile can take a big ass, wasteful engine and build a large vehicle around it. That takes absolutely no intelligence at all.

It takes real genius, however, to design an efficient and powerful engine and then carefully design a vehilce around it that will carry people and their belongings in comfort and save fuel at the same time.

The Ford Excursion or Ford conquest, or whatever that monstrosity is called, is an example of an imbecile taking a big engine and building a huge, and ugly, body around it.

Unfortunately there are no examples of intelligent SUV design.

I believe in a free market. If people want to plunk their money paying for gas to sustain their junkie-like habits, so be it.

I rather bank the money, save it, and when the real estate market crashes (because people can't pay for gas for their SUVs and at the same time deal with their ARMs) I will be liquid enough to pick up a few choice pieces of RE.

Tax credits similar to those available for the Toyota Prius are available for some GM SUVs.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the Silverado the biggest GM SUV in size?

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced that purchasers of qualified General Motors Corp. hybrid vehicles may continue to claim the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit.
GMC sold 2,927 qualifying vehicles to retail dealers in the quarter ending March 31, 2007. This brings the cumulative number of qualified GM hybrid vehicles sold to 8,485. The credit amount and make and model of qualified vehicles sold are:

Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid 2WD, Model Years 2006 and 2007 $250
Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid 4WD, Model Years 2006 and 2007 $650
GMC Sierra Hybrid 2WD, Model Years 2006 and 2007 $250
GMC Sierra Hybrid 4WD, Model Years 200 and 2007 $650
Saturn Vue Green Line, Model Year 2007 $650
Saturn Aura Hybrid, Model Year 2007 $1,300
Purchasers of GMC’s qualified vehicles may continue to rely on the certifications concerning the vehicles’ qualification for the credit.

Consumers seeking the credit may want to buy early because the full credit is only available for a limited time. Taxpayers may claim the full amount of the allowable credit up to the end of the first calendar quarter after the quarter in which the manufacturer records its sale of the 60,000th vehicle. For the second and third calendar quarters after the quarter in which the 60,000th vehicle is sold, taxpayers may claim 50 percent of the credit. For the fourth and fifth calendar quarters, taxpayers may claim 25 percent of the credit. No credit is allowed after the fifth quarter.

My wife just recently returned, on a part time basis, to her before-motherhood career: tax accounting.

The stuff you find in the tax codes (as you already know) is incredible!

BTW Jim, have you had a chnace to work on the idle oin your 300CE?

I was wondering if the "fix" suggested in Stu's book actually works.

Hey, if she is happy and doesn't look back, more power to you. As I said, my wife still looks back to her Merkur Scorpio although her cars are much better and easier to get parts for. I sold it because it was heading for an expensive and lengthy breakdown and I didn't want to scrounge parts for it anymores. So, if she has no regrets, more power to you. The drunk who hit my 8000# Excursion was badly injured. She got bruised a little. I'll set her up with the biggest car and safest car she can drive comfortably and likes.

Your station wagons able to tow my 8500# toy hauler? What about your trailer with 2 ATVs in it? Lets see how far they get. ATVs are 1600# plus whatever the trailer weighs. Lets not forget the wind resistance and all the sail area when you are considering the trailer.

Blame it on Bush. He stopped the Stem Cell research. If we had stem cells, who knows. In any case, regeneration is not one of my subjects of interest so I am not too well versed in it.

I don't like to have too many vehicles hanging around so if you can find me the one vehicle that will do all that I want it to do and cheaper, I'll go for it. Needs to be a 2nd car, be able to tow heavy loads, carry dogs in comfort (60# 70# and 110#), cannot cost more than the current solution all things considered (fuel, space, insurance, maintenance, vehicle cost, etc, etc). The way I see it, either it has to be a truck like an F250, F350 or an Excursion with a diesel. I never wanted either but if I want the toys I have, I have to have one or the other. But hey, you got a better idea? If so, I'm listening.

This is not going to work. The idea is noble but it is not feasible. Instead of buying gas on the 15th, people will buy it on the 14th or wait a day and buy on the 16th.

This idea is like a timeshare swap. Looks good on paper until you actually attempt to get a swap.
