I drove a 78 diesel Rabbit 5 speed in the 80's, and it would get over 50mpg on the freeway regularly... but it couldn't get uphill at more than 55mph. Fun car around the city, just slow in between them. I hitched a ride in a VW fox from an old timer who drove me to Columbus OH at between 41 and 49mph on I 70. We made the 2 hour trip in aprox 4 hours as we were buffeted by big Novas and Gremlins wizing by... and the occasional semi-nomis. The geezer swore that it was possible (with a tune up and near perfect opperating conditions) to achieve near 70mpg in a VW... but backed off the contention as practical for regular driving.

One of our saleswomen used her own 2002 (?) TDI wagon for awhile and used our Wright Express fleet card and she averaged a tick over 48 mpg with a heavy foot but it was mostly highway driving.
