VW TDI Wagon MPG

I was driving home from the bookstore, behind a new TDI wagon. The license plate read "50 MPG" allsohad a bumper sticker extolling the virtues of biodiesel and a "Starfleet Academy" sticker on the rear window.

Do these really get 50 mpg?

No, but they're so depressing to drive that 30 miles of travel seems like 50. Starfleet Academy sticker? I would have nerfed him off the road on principle.

Oh so tempting.

Sans the silly messages, it wasn't a bad looking ride. It was black and he was riding on some tasteful 17" rims.

The driver was a dead ringer for this fella'

They come pretty close. We average around 48mpg in the '06 TDI and I regularly see 45 in my 81 VW pickup.

I'd be hard pressed to figure that one out if I drove a S600 biturbo, (wink, wink, drool!)

Supposedly, from what i have read on TDI club, the wagon has the best shape to get the high mileage. You CAN get 50 miles per gallon with those things, using petroleum diesel and not going over 55 miles per gallon, and with a stick-shift.

you mean 55 MPH, right?

isn't the shape the same except with the station wagon extension? What about the extra weight?

i have a 2000 jetta tdi 4dr and if i don't get over 50 i'm pissed.i've kept records over the last 40,000 miles since i bought the car and my average is just a hair over 50,this is figuring summer and winter driving,to get over 50 mpg you will have to get one with a manual trans, the auto's eat at least 5 mpg's.

Slightly off topic, but I looked at a new GTI today. Even they get 32mpg. 0-60 in 6.9 sec., DSG transmission, and 200hp turbo for under 24K. I can say I am very tempted.

I guess the point of my thread was discovering that it gets ~50mpg. Also, why purchase a semi-battery powered car (a whole slough of other issues) and buy a modern diesel instead ??

The license plate and stickers were indeed nerdy. Just poking fun, but not the car itself.

Because people are afraid of diesels. They have a bad rep of being smoky, dirty and what not. Also fuel is harder to get than gas, cold starting issues, dirty diesel pumps, etc, etc

I am sure the wagon is capable of 50mpg with the 6 speed and 55mph with no hills.

Besides all of the obvious diesel notoriety, there is no point in buying a hybrid for steady state freeway driving. You're running the engine anyways and generating more loss through the gasoline to electric conversion.
