Things that sound great.

WVO's thread about DJ's 'issue' with the Mustang got me thinking about this.

What machinery sound do you love to hear or do you think is unique? Why?

Here's few to get started:

North American B-25
- two radial engines, with exhaust manifolding that, if I understand correctly, is unique to radials.

Articulated steam locomotives - once again, two engines, unusual exhaust configuration.

Any lash-up of first generation, normally aspirated EMD locomotives
- the term 'chant' doesn't begin to describe what a 96 cylinders worth of 16V-567 EMDs sounds like at 11 mph in Run-8.

617 Benz diesel once it gets good and hot.

My International Harvester Model 686 farm tractor - 65 HP inline 6. I ran it for a couple hours last night with the mower. It purrs like a kitten when it gets nice and warmed up.

I actually like the laser beam sound of grinding gears, if it weren't for knowing whats happening when it makes that sound.

That's one of my favorite sounds as well, however my favorite is a Class C Shay. There is nothing like 3 steam cylinders of fury pulling a load at 15mph.

Ahh, winding out the V12 in the SL600 is pretty nice. Actually is sounds GREAT!

Other than that, I like the sound of the M103 pulling toward redline. Sounds pretty good.

the ferrari v 12 screams like a f1 car when you wind it up to 7000 rpm.

any of the ww2 war birds are pretty unique sounding. a group of them flew over the indy 500 track about 15 years ago with chuck yeager at the stick of a mustang before the race. a b 17 was in the group. what a sound what an image.

i can pick them out of the many many planes that fly over our house liining up to land at the purdue airport across the river.

i have never heard a v 16 that i know of but a straight eight sounds distinctive and cool.

and finally the old jimmy diesels sounded a lot like a v12 when they revved up. of course i didnt know what a v 12 xounded like back then but i loved the high pitched sound and the whine of the supercharger.

back in the sixties the sound of the novi at the speedway was very special too. you could hear the supercharger whistling before anything else and as it got closer the bellow of the exhaust became quite great. it would definately make the hair stand up on your neck.

a rumly oil pull sounds pretty cool too. (that is a really old tractor with one or two very large cylinders which if not under load coast giving a unique sound since they kindof fire at random).

Honda S2000 engine I revved up to 9000 RPM when I drove it (dealerships ). Apparently the later S2000's have it limited down to a paltry 8000 RPM (though more torque).

The OM617 sounds pretty sweet when the exhaust is opened up. Beautiful in fact at full throttle.
