They got what they deserved, they starved that kid to death. The courts did not declare them insane so they new exactly what they were doing.

Hard to say. Do you know any Vegans personally? I know a few, and seriously, they are that stupid. They lose the pigmentation in their skin, lots of weight, require 12 hours of sleep, no energy and no strength, however they cannot be convinced that its wrong. To them, it may not have seemed so bad. Doesn't let them off the hook, don't get me wrong, just that it is very easy to believe that they actually thought they were doing the "right" thing. Then, you could also say (I wouldn't because of the common sense thing) that they weren't told soy milk and juice diet kills babies. And considering how stupid everyone else is, that wouldn't amaze me to hear as a defense. So, lock them up, keep the sentence even, or just say like 30 years, life won't be much different, but criminal negligence is more appropriate, I think than calling it intentional. But they may very well have done it intentionally as well?

Sad and pathetic.

Let them stay in prison, keep their vegan-nourished genes out of the global gene pool.

The best food for babies is breast milk. Period. End of story. Apple juice at 6 weeks?? Soy milk? A newborn baby needs protein, fatty acids, vitamins, antibodies, etc...all of which can only be found in mother's milk. Formula is an good alternative when breast feeding isn't an option, but even formula lacks the complex fatty acids and antibodies that help nourish and sustain babies.

After millions of years of evolution, mother nature gets a few things right.

Ah...but they were probably Creationists as well.

I seriously doubt it--quite the opposite I'd wager (at least in my experience).

I agree with the rest of your post entirely.

Expect though, in the next two years, there will be formula with at least some antibodies present on the market for sale to the public. There are some well-published studies currently being done in Chile and somewhere else I recently read about that are using hyperimmunized cows and producing 'formula' for babies containing anti-rotavirus and anti-escherishcia coli too.

On the legal ****: OP--you realize this case was tried to a jury, and not plead to involuntary manslaughter--which if offered would have addressed most of the outrage expressed here over the sentence? I honestly don't know what was offered (yet), but you can bet something was and I found a quote in another article from the father to the effect that they didn't realize involuntary manslaughter was a felony three years ago when this happened. Also in another article I found (I am not on my home 'puter and can't begin to figure out how to cut and paste), there are quotes that the father gave to the AP that "We are vegetarians. We don't eat meat because it is cruel, why would we feed our son in a way that was cruel....."

Now as an attorney, I am thinking, there is a big difference between vegans and vegetarians. Sounds like the co-defendant didn't know the difference, which indicates to me that he may not have been either a vegan or a vegetarian. Attorneys have been know to concoct defenses before for their clients. There was no food, vegan, vegetarian or otherwise found in these parents apartment three years ago when this happened.

Final point of interest in the articles I read----THERE WERE FOUR VEGETARIANS ON THE JURY. As a defense attorney, I would have felt real good about this. On the other hand, I bet the prosecutors didn't give a **** because they apparently had such a good case.

Known a few but it is hard to get them to go to dinner since they have to eat Vegan food.

Unhappy *** You say PETA - I say Vegan... ***

In a society where we have demonstrated (at least the media has...) that we honor animals more than we honor our smallest citizens, this particular sentence screams "It's about FREAKING TIME!!!!"

Anyone, killing a child, deserves no less than life without parole, if they're not required to give up their own.

Drive drunk and kill a child?

Death or Life behind bars, no parole...

Starve a child - TO DEATH?

Death or Life behind bars, no parole...

You knew it was happening and did nothing to stop it?

Your reproductive organs should be forfeited and you need some serious mental therapy...behind bars...

When you mess with a kid's life, your life should be messed up (legally) by a factor of 10...

And any attorney, caught trying to bend the facts to get these bastards off, should have their license to practice revoked and they shouldn't be allowed to work in the public sector - for public pay, for the rest of their lives...

No government jobs or goverment hand-outs...

Maybe the courts' calendars will start clearing up and all this "B.S." trial-crap will start to fizzle out.

But, until we start electing officials, w/nads, all we're able to do is pray, hope and dream.

At least, once in a while, something comes through...

Small consolation when such a heavy price was paid by such a small child...

It's all about sensation and we all know that. But like a train wreck, we can't help but watch it so they sell it. If it didn't sell, they won't print it. Don't see what PETA has to do with this.

I can see how you want to take a person's life if they took some kid's life. But mess them up 10 times worse? Does it mean that all citizens are equal but some are more equal than others?

Why only limit it for attorneys that are trying to bend facts when the case involves a child? Once again, are all citizens equal but some more equal than others? If so, why should anyone's life be more valuable based on their age? Why not their sex, earning potential, color of hair, etc, etc? They way I see it, I don't deem that kid's life any more valuable than yours and vice versa.

Burgermeister--while I agree with much of what you say (in this thread and others), I am only offering a theory of what I suspect, and I will also be honest in that I practice criminal law (however I don't represent anyone involved in the commission of a crime against a child or any form of sexual assault Ds).

These people had three years to plead to something less than what they got. I think maybe some folks are thinking a gun was held to their head last week, and they had to roll the dice. Also, in a state like GA where there is no judicial discretion in sentencing in a case like this and the jury doesn't even get to make that call--you can bet your last dollar that the jury AND the defendants were made aware of this fact.

Two things I would like to know: toxicology on the defendants following the death of the child and what was offered as a plea bargain. If I find out anything on my own, I will also post.

It is because children can't defend themselves like you can Aklim, gdamit. With no slight about the fact that you don't have kids ect, surely you would agree that this distinction merits harsher deterring criminal consequences?

I wouldn't have a vegan over for dinner--you'd have to clean too many to make a meal and I bet they taste like air.

OTOH, why don't you take a few out for dinner? It could be good if you are a "meat and potatoes" guy. Think about it. You go to a steakhouse, you get the meat and potatoes they get the salad. 2 dinners for the price of 1. Cheap date. If I ever date again, it would be something to consider.

I'll convert them. Every chef thinks they can convert a vegan. Kinda like every man thinks they can convert a lesbian.

Actually, I wouldn't. Assuming we have 3 people who are proven guilty and I was in charge of the punishment totally. One committed a crime against a kid, another against an adult and another against an old person. They'd all hang just as high since I wouldn't view any victim more valuable than the other.
