It's not to make it seem faster. The problem is that it takes more than eight bits to send one octet (eight-bit entity), so bits/sec is well-defined but octets/sec is not. The telcos buy and sell bandwidth by the bit, and are not trying to fool each other.

In that case, since your all bent outta shape about internet speed not being whats advertised....

I should be garanteed 15 up 15 down all the time from my ISP. I am going to call and complain.

Also, they have a 50 up 50 down plan. Only 125 a month for a year if I get on it right now.... The possibilities....

(I can get that plan if I can subsidize it... Anyone need an exchange account?)

I get better speeds than my provider advertises; you don't get it do you?

In areas that have less competition they bottleneck connections while charging a premium for the service. If it was not for the broadband bill in 2001 I would be forking over $500 mo for a T1 if I wanted broadband. They are revising the broadband bill to make providers open the pipeline.

I have two companies that offer me fiber at home.... Verizon and Surewest.

I am with Surewest.

My plan is 20 up 20 down. 15 up 15 down gauranteed.

That is why you have good rates. I don't knock my DSL provider too much because the uptime is T1 grade our cable is a complete joke. The DSL provider will not increase the bandwidth until the cable provider increases the pipeline. They are laying new fibre in my area and testing powerline based systems. Even if the fibre does make it on my road I am still screwed because I am 900 ft from the road so install would be in the $4000 range.

you need to make friends with someone that works for the telphone company. A (very good) friend works for the tel company, and he pulls fiber all day. Gave him a ring, and he brought the material and the tools (fusion tool thingy - very cool!) and hooked me up to my fiber. I lease the box from my isp, and all is well. I got him to hook up my fiber for a case of beer!
