$20 Wwwwhaaatt!!!{scratches his head in confusion}even for my most desirable antiques I've never spent more than $15,000...chiefly on leather upholstery, tops and brightwork refinishing. Most all the mechanicals and body I do myself.

I really missed my calling.

There's a guy up in New England runs you a close second if we are to judge from his posts.............

This can't be real. You would have been better off just leaving the car there and not paying for it. NEVER take an aging unmaintained MB to a dealership. It would be safer to give a Chimp a loaded pistol.......

.. I don't believe a bit of this story

no on in their right mind would spend 20k on a 20 year old car... A normal person would have noticed(which has been posted over and over again) you could buy a NEW C class for a little more...

Well ladies and germs, I am about to drop more coin on my 300TE. The thing has low compression on cylinder #6.... She currently is undergoing a leakdown test to see where its leaking to...

I can feel it now... Another huge repair bill...

Yeah, it was replaced a year ago.... The new one thats in there is going south.... Bad compression on cylinder 6.... Dangit...

So, I am seeing where the compression is going, then I will proceed from there...

Hopefully its just a toasty valve.

Well if you decide to keep it get a Metric rebuild, junk yard motors are not going to be any better then what you have in it.

Or you can ebay it and get something else...

Smile 420 money pit......

Last year I spent 25,000 (Can) restoring the 420 I had purchased two years ago -without any maintenance I had driven it 85,000 km's. The initial estimate to fix up the car was 3-5 K -final bill as above. I love the car
but could have bought a nice 500SL or two for the money I spent on my 420 -great reliable daily driver -everything from suspension. timing chain, etc......was replaced. Need to shim up a lifter or two though due to sticky valves making initial startup rough. Just had it emissions tested and the mechanic could not believe how well the old thing fared...
I just need another 10,000 for the body, A/C, auto locks etc......

Jason, be careful how you spend your money. It is hard making money, it is easy to spend it, it is even harder to save it.

$35k sounds about right to bring a W126 back, a little on the high side but not out of line. When all is said and done mine will probably take about that. I'll probably get right to the doorstep of $30k in a couple of years after I get all the body work done, and the interior will make up the difference. Its going to need a trans soon, so $1k, and I'd really like to take out the rear suspension, paint it and replace all the bushings. In another 5 years its going to need new seats, wood, carpet, and probably a headliner and a bunch of other stuff while I'm at it. I figure that alone is $5k.
