I read somewhere that Apple has the longest "applicant list" than any other company in the US, I think Google has passed them but only by a little.

Don't take it hard and keep beating the pavement, apply at some cellular stores part time people wrack some good $$$$$$ if they are in a corporate store.

Even in the south, you should be able to easily get a job on a framing crew for $15/hour. I got two college kids working for me running errands and pay them $10/hour and $.40/per mile. I pay a process server $35/ a pop to hand deliver papers.... get off the video games or whatever and go outside and get a job.

Don't you have to be over 18 to do that kind of job?

I applied to all the restaurants around here already. $15/hr sounds nice, I'll check that one out...

Dude, you've got a skill that you're not considering: CAD. The U.S. economy is booming; there is a severe shortage of skilled labor. Go for it and get out of the unskilled labor pool. It will change your world.

I think age is only going to be an issue if you are serving booze. You can't serve process if you are under 18, but you can darn sure swing a hammer. Just go ask around--all they can say is no. I am not giving you a hard time, but you posted about not having a job three months ago here---so what did you do with the last 90 days?

JD is dead on. The amount a teenager can make is limited only by his will to work. When you're 18-19 and you hussle, you can do well.

I called a CAD dealer about getting certified in Solidworks and he said its only avalable for those already in the field. I sent him some work I have done and he said its impressive but I cannot be certified. I know more about that software than some the noobs in the classes.

My CAD teacher knows some people.. Ill call him and see if anyone needs a drafters assistant or something.

I was impressed by some young teens in my neighbourhood the other day. They had a truck and had rented an aerator. They were driving around, offering to aerate entire lawns for $25. I have a 100'x150' lot, so that was a deal and a half. I gladly paid the $25.

One guy would start, while his buddy would drive up the street and try and secure more deals. Took him about 15-20 mins to do the lawn. His friend came back, picked him up and off to the next one.

I admired their entrepreneurship.

Don,
Contact some local Engineering firms. We are always looking for good, reliable help., I would suppose it is the same everywhere. The complaint is that most "surveyors" now have no concept of the job--the computer does it all- they simply push buttons. The problem is that they cannot recognoze when the computer gives them bad information.
Same for CAD people--We need them. I do not believe "certification" is an issue. Just show up, and prove that you can do the work.
If you feel like relocating to northern MD, let me know; I will arrange some kind of an interview--internet, phone, something.
Even in my field of Construction Materials Testing, I cannot get good people. An awlful lot of people your age just do not want to work, especially in the heat and the cold and the dust of a construction site. I get applications from people who tell me all about their computer skilss--all I need is a realiable person, strong enough to lift 60-70 lbs, with a reliable vehicle that they do not mind if it gets dirty, and who can do basic arithmetic ( add, subtract, multiply, divide, and the occasional sq rt). We start people with no skills at $11 or better--they can get to $13-$14 pretty quickly. If they show some aptitude for the work, and the ability to learn the job, and communicate with people in a rational way, they can get into a little management. I have one job that requires 4 people each day--I would LOVE to have a capable, responsible person to put on that site to handle all the little management-type issues and not continually call my senior-level people.

As an example of the poor quality of people I am seeing coming out of HS and college--- I had a young guy in the field, and as part of the daily work, he has to perform some simple calibrations on the euipment. One task is to average the results from three runs. The data from his three runs was, 3.08, 3.12, 3.10. I am not making this up) I asked him to average them. he punched some numbers on his hand-held graphing calculator and after several minutes, announced the answer was 23.7. I said " No, that is wrong, try it again" He protested, showing me the calculator display. I asked him to try again. On the third try, he got it right. My problem was that he had so little actual understanding of what is an average that he could not recognze that his first answer was absurd.

The work we do is not hard--we test, and make observations, and report what we observe and test.

Get a 2 year nursing degree, become a traveling nurse. You can make $100k and see the US, not even 40 hrs/week.

You are destined for something much greater than Apple. Sending you lots of luck.
