Jim Webb versus Lindsay Graham

Webb and Graham were going at each other pretty good on yesterday's Meet the Press. Webb got really hot when Lindsay tried to make the point that the troops in Iraq support the President's policies. Webb cited polling data saying that only 35% of military people in Iraq support the President. He said that Graham was putting political words in the mouths of the servicemen and women.

Webb ridiculed Graham's visits to Iraq as being "dog and pony shows." That accusation is strengthened by Graham's association with the nitwit from Indiana Rep. Pence who said that the visit that Graham, McCain, and Pence made to a Baghdad market reminded him of a farm market back home. Nonsensical statements like that really do create an image of a dog and pony show.

Which of these senators is closer to the mark for supporting the troops?

Here's a link to yesterday's Meet the Press: http://thinkprogress.org/2007/07/15/webb-v-graham/

I went to a market in Barbados once. It reminded me of a market I went to in Costa Rica.

Now tell me what image you have of my trip to Barbados and if you are close I will ship you a handle of Mount Gay Eclipse.

Isn't politics really the art of talking a lot without really saying anything at all?

Call me crazy (it's been done before ...... no really .. it has) but I am gussing that the the "market back home" did not have armed military walking around and the threat from IED or car bombs was a bit more remote. Just a guess on my part, I could be wrong.

I can see the two markets you discribe as being similar to each other.

The key to politics is having a 'handle of Mount Gay Eclipse' in the wings.

I saw a couple of birds. Guess which one was prettier. One was covered by opalescent, regal feathers and the other was brown.

I have an image of drunkenness and debauchery.

Is that close?

Hardly; which could also be used to describe the aforementioned failed market metaphor to further a position.

I don't know about that, but I do know to a 100% certainty that Pence is a knucklehead for comparing that Baghdad market to anything in Indiana. That whole charade that McCain, Pence, and Graham went through in that Baghdad market insulted the intelligence of the American people.

Why not just say the argument for continuing the war "that they are a lot like us, and therefore we should continue to fight there" is a crock...

It's not about the markets being similar... they may well be.

And I think participating in that farce -- with the flack jacket and all -- was the final nail in the coffin for McCain's presidential hopes.

I always liked Jim Webb. And I think it is entirely right for him to accuse Graham of putting political words in the soldier's mouths. That is EXACTLY what Graham was doing ... as part of the never-ending effort to short-circuit any kind of reasonable, measured debate about the war.

Did someone make that argument? Does it even make any sense?

Pence wanted to mislead people into thinking that the Baghdad market was safe. He did this for political purposes.

I know almost nothing about Webb beyond that sentiment, but he holds the position extremely well.

I watched an armed services committee meeting, or whichever committee it is that he sits on, ...
...when he followed a similar line of a senators questioning of a general, about the troops 'support for the policy in Iraq'.
... with a series of questions about soilders reasons for joining the army ...and how in fact, political persuasion played very little part in the decision to serve.
He went on to imply that they were patriots and that they generaly supported there commander and chief but their political beliefs were varied, not uniform.

He was impressive in his ability to make this point, though I have yet to see him make any other points, I hope he turns out to be an effective legislator in other areas as well.

Who here has been to these two markets?

Who cares if he thinks they are similar?

If the markets are identical, what impact should that have on Iraq policy?
