Actually,,, the people seem to really care about doing their job right and getting things to fit as good as possible. You will never see someone spend that amount of time on a door or a hood in an American factory.

I read the wikapedia entry on these cars. In 1957 they were modern for European standards. They were still using the same technology in 1990 including the two stroke engines.

I saw U2 a few years back and they had Trabants as props for their show.

The hilarious part of the video was that all of those deftly-applied fine adjustments would be thrown out of whack upon encountering the first pothole.

A friend of mine used to live in the DDR. He told me that when he was born, his parents ordered his. By the time he was old enough to drive, he finally received it. He promptly sold it, and bought a used Scirocco.

It was an engineering marvel if you appreciate simplicity.
Two cylinder, two stroke 600cc engine (26 or 28 hp, I can't remember).
0 to a 100 under 1 minute.
Gas tank placed atop the engine no need for fuel pump.
Front wheel drive, body made of plastic, never rusted.
Air cooled, no radiator neck breaking, no leaking water pump.
No air conditioning, no costly evaporator replacement.
Two stroke engine, no wiring harness problem.
No power windows, no window regulator breaking.
No valves, no leaking guides.
I never had the (mis)fortune to own one.
