Their food isn't fit to eat, their toys can't be played with what makes anyone think they can produce a decent auto?

...and people ask me why I don't just resurrect the old Beetle and let my daughter drive it when she comes of age!!!

Fortunately she doesn't ask the same question! She already knows that a W126 is probably going to be her first vehicle...especially with all of the testosterone-laden teens with pickups with large tires and lift kits!

Americans are buying more small cars to cut fuel costs, and that might kill them.
As a group, occupants of small cars are more likely to die in crashes than those in bigger, heavier vehicles are, according to data from the government, the insurance industry and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS).
This links to a recent article at USA Today. I wonder if it is designed to boost the sales of large cars?

I talked to a Toyota salesman recently and he said the small cars are all sold before the dealer can get them.

Perhaps, but what it may spur is a continuation of a growing trend in automobile design to make large vehicles more crash-friendly with smaller vehicles. One effect of this trend is the lowering of the effective bumper height on large SUVs and trucks to decrease the incidence of bumper override during truck/car accidents, and to allow a greater chance that the truck will strike the more reinforced areas of car doors in the event of side-impact collisions.

However, it is difficult to overcome one cold fact of physics: If two objects collide, the object with greater mass will decelerate more slowly than the other object. As the chance and degree of passenger injury generally increases with the rate of deceleration, the F-150 will always win over the Focus, as long as the truck doesn't roll over.

My parents and the parents of my peers generally subscribed to the Sherman Tank philosophy of vehicle selection. Back in the day I switched back and forth from a 4,800 lb Chevy station wagon to a 3,400 lb. Firebird. Most of my friends were driving vehicles that are now the darlings of demo derbies because they were/are so damn hard to total. I had one friend who wrapped a '72 Pontiac Catalina around a pole in a drag race. The car was toast, but the unbelted driver walked away without injury, at least until his father got ahold of him when he arrived home.

It was probably more dangerous to drive a small car back in the Seventies due to the greater mass disparity between small and large cars back then.

I wonder about this one too. Your chances of colliding with a lighter vehicle now are better and the smaller cars are safer. But, we had the 55mph limit then, now 80mph on the interstate is common. Speeding and running red lights seem more common now.

The override thing is very real. A vehicle setup for off-road use is designed to slide over obstacles. In a collision the design works to override the lower vehicle.

I wish that more people drove like they wanted everyone to get home safely each night. But when people wish with one hand, you gotta wonder what they are doing with the other.

There needs to be heavier penalties for red light offenses, as well as speeding in residential areas.

Blech

I absolutely hate speeding tickets. They serve no purpose other than to piss off the general driving population.

We routinely have 30-35 MPH speed limts on two lane, wide, well paved, non residential roads. I was tagged today for doing "40 in a 30" to the tune of 140 dollars in the 190D. Ironically, I was following the car in front of me!

Issuing tickets probably won't make me slow down. I'll just have more of a disdain for these so called "crime fighters." While someone was probably selling drugs or getting beaten up in the ghetto four blocks from the scene of my "offense", this clown is issuing speeding tickets..and he wasn't even stopped! He knew how fast I was going, going in the opposite direction and towards me.

Venting over.

Chinese products suck. Probably this clown's radar detector.

I agree.

We definitely should have no enforcement of the traffic laws. It's absolutely criminal that these $hitboxes should be held to 50 mph in a 35 zone. They should certainly be allowed to go 70 in a 35 because God knows their time is far more important than the lives of any pedestrians, dogs, or other motorists entering or exiting the roadway.........

Well Kyle, you have no one to blame but yourself, as the 190D is a well-known ticket magnet, particularly when painted in such a bold color.

Damn straight, why I can't drive 50 in a 25 with my H2 is beyond me!

Heh

I know it is a speed machine.

Just hate the fact that you get ticketed in places where there are NO houses, when following a car in front of you. Out of state plates probably a good reason.
