I thought that the US-spec DeLorean engine only made about 130 HP which would put it up against a Toyota Celica in terms of power-to-weight ratio. Remember, 1980-1981 was pretty much the nadir of horsepower production in US-Spec cars. In California, they were selling new Corvettes with a 305 V8, and Mercedes was selling the 1981 380SL with 155 hp. 0-60 times in the 10 second range were commonplace in all but the hottest cars sold then.

Yeah, the DeLorean won't win any races. A high school friend's Dad owned one and he was easily beat by my other friend's 84 Olds wagon (307 V8). It also overheated in heavy summer traffic. Other than that it was a neat car, also very comfortable to drive.

Plucked from the net:

The DeLorean sports coupe went on sale during 1981, but the company collapsed into bankruptcy in 1982, and this meant that the car was only ever marketed in the United States. In Federal form its PRV V6 engine had been enlarged to 2,849cc — as in the latest Volvo 760 GLE saloon, for instance — and it produced up to 130bhp. The unladen weight was only 2,840 lb, which reflected great credit on the Lotus design team and their experience with such structures. It was not, however, anything like as quick as its looks suggested. Road & Track’s authoritative road test showed that the top speed was a mere 109mph — in fifth or fourth gear — that 0-60mph acceleration took a rather pedestrian 10.5sec, and that 0-100mph needed no less than 40sec and a lot of straight highway. All this helped to give the car its ‘gutless’ reputation, right from the start. Day-to-day fuel consumption was quoted as 19mpg (US gallons)/22. 8mpg (Imperial gallons).

I bet the biggest problem was that it LOOKED so fast.

Kindof like a woman who......

Oh never mind.

A Lotus V8, nice engine just wouldn't want to have to live with it.

I'd swap an LS1 or 302 in. You can build a 302 that will rev sky high, and put out a ton of power pretty reasonable, I'm thinking one of those would make the DeLorean the car it should have been.

I like the Chevy engine idea. That's what I would want in one. LS-1, or regular SBC. Paired up with a 5, or 6 speed manual, the car would be able to get out of it's own way.

James said if the PRV is toast he has some form of GM engine idea. The main issue is making sure the engine spins the right way for the transmission

The engines in the Deloreans, still rotate clock-wise, like most others, with the exception of Honda/Acura. Though the set-up is mounted facing the opposite direction, it operates like a transverse mounted set-up in a Fiero. The transmission, and in some vehicles, a sort of "Transfer case" ( Like a 4x4 truck has in it) is what determines the direction of travel for the vehicle. It doesn't matter that the engine, and transmission face the opposite way. The engine still rotates "Clock-wise".

Maybe keep up with DeLorean's past and stick a GTO engine in there?
