Getting Flamed

A flame shaped solar prominence four times the size of earth has occurred on the suns western horizon.

A good chance for viewing aurora will exist in the northern latitudes for the next few nights.

Four times the height of earth.

Not bad for absolute rock bottom of the solar cycle.

Edit: Maybe it's ES12a...

Back when the speed of light was a constant you could easily compute how long it took for light to reach us from the Sun.

Here's NOAA's version of the map:

This event started a few days ago. I just heard of it today.

Edit: Oops, that is the exact same map already posted.

Last time something like this happened, Auroras (not the Oldsmobile or top secret plane, ) were seen as far south as Texas. There will probably be a lot of dropped cell phone calls too during this period.

I recall being on a commercial jet from N'awlings to Washington DC one night back in the mid 80's. There was a bunch of sunspot / flair activity going on at the time. Pilot prompted us to look out the left side windows to see the aurora. It was awesome!! I'd guess we were somwhere over Kentucky or Tennessee at the time. It was a cooler display than I'd ever seen, even better than when camping in Northern Ontario as a kid.

That has got to be the same one we saw from the ground when I lived in Picayune. It was a cold winter night with this great reddish mass glowing silently in the clear night sky.

You know who Nash Roberts is? For those who don't know, Nash is an ancient retired meteorologist whom they bring out of mothballs whenever they want people to take weather seriously. His brother, Ep, called us about the aurora and said we needed to go outside for a look at a rare phenomenon that far south.

Yes Virginia, there is a Picayune, MS.
