He probably should have changed the rear diff too, the v8 equipped trucks probably carried a taller gear in the rear.

The body wasn't rust proof ... tough luck
My scout slowly is becomming aluminum bodied from the bottom up.

Any way to tell the displacement? I have no knowledge of old International engines. What to look for???

Anyone here familiar with these old beast? Any web sites?

Also, it has a 75 gallon saddle tank almost full of old gas. I'm wondering if there is some additive I could use and just run it. Getting rid of that much old gas may be a problem.
Dan, Loadstars can have either the 345 or 392. Cooling can be an issue, there were some design flaws that kept coolant flow from being less than ideal. There are remedies and aftermarket parts that help address that issue. Smoking on startup is fairly common. Otherwise they are stout engines.

I've got a 69' Scout 800 that sat in a field for a decade w/the 196 which is essentially the 392 cut in half. A fluid change, some new gas and spark plugs and the thing fired up after a few cranks. The body for all intents and purposes is shot (an IH trademark) but I'm not giving up on it. It'll be a good mule for perfecting my welding skills.

Try The Binder Bulletin http://www.binderbulletin.org/ or The Binder Bench http://www.justih.org/Binder-Bench/index.php . While they are mainly Light Line (light truck) oriented there should be some Loadstar info.

Going to have a good look this afternoon. Seller says kids w/BB guns shot the door windows out. I'm hoping the floor pans are not rusted out.
Body looks straight and complete in the pics and it was street legal up until a few months back. Seller still has it insured which he has agreed to carry for my 35 mile drive back to the ranch. I thought this was brave of him.

He bought it five yrs ago with a slight engine knock. His mechanic found a broken piston skirt, honed the cylinder and replaced the one piston and all rings, rod and main bearings. Also, got a new timing chain, and valve job.
Its seen light use at his farm since. He claims maybe 1-2K miles on the rebuild.
Brakes work but the rr wheel cylinder seeps. Hydraulic dump works good.

Tires are one concern of mine as I think they are split rims. I don't think many tire shops around doing those anymore. Seller just says they hold air for yrs. I just don't want one coming apart on the way back at top speed of... 45-50mph. It will never see more than 10mph at the ranch.
I need to move a bunch of dirt to fill some low spots. I'm digging it out of a dry pond at the far west side and its impossible to carry a tractor bucket at a time. A dump truck would speed things up.

Plus, Did I say it was cool looking? Big hood, massive grill...

Dan, I just wanted to add that if it's not a V8 there are some 258 straight 6's out there, which are torquey and durable.

I do like the older IH trucks, light and medium duty. I could have fun with an old 60's Loadstar with about a 10' dump body! But alas, I'm stuck in the middle of suburbia and they kinda frown on vehicles all over the yard. But once my father retires there'll be stuff parked all over the lot here at work

Wasted trip, I passed on it.
The 345 coughed and sputtered and had white smoke out of one bank. Seller says it was 'old gas'.
Gear shift lever was so sloppy I couldn't tell if it was a four or five speed.
Brake pedal went to the floor upon first push. One tire was badly dry rotted.
The hydraulic dump worked well and the body was straight with little rust.
Doors had interior handles fabricated and welded on the shafts of the window crank shaft and door latch shaft. That was when I stopped looking.

Back to my '66 Chevy C60 2 ton project.
I need to locate a brake/clutch master cylinder. Both bores are in one common casting. Mine is rusted up. I have it soaking in a bucket connected to a batt charger negative and a SS spoon on the positive. Maybe I can remove enough rust and hone to clean it up for a rebuild.
Then there's the two center driveshaft support bearings I need to replace.
It may take a while before she does any work again.

That's nice. I heard there are also fiberglass aftermarket parts.
I really bonded with mine, but after all, I gave up riding on 2 solid axles and leaf springs.

Sellers memory must have been shot. His original story didn't jive with what I found.

Dan,
How are you gonna get dirt in that dumper without a track loader?

Dan, if you are looking for a Loadstar, there is (was) one for sale as you approach Hudon Oaks (Weatherford) exit on I-20. It was a school board truck, not a dump, but has a nice cargo bed on it. Needs some work, but it ran and drove about 9 months ago when I looked at it. I passed because we were moving. It is brown and at a building that once was a gas station and now is a sort of junk store. Also, if you find one you want and the engine is toast, look around for a Loadstar school bus. they go cheap and were usually well-maintained. They make great donors. Check out oldihc.org also.
