Bot, do you know if it's true that animals and insects sense approaching eathquakes before scientific instruments do? It seems like this book or article mentioned studies being done with cockroaches. I think iI read that in a book somewhere. If it was in a book, it must be true . . .

I think the Japanese have done the most active research on this which makes sense--they have a whole lot of earthquakes. In my recollection, they could find no difference in the frequency of animal behavior correctly predicting vs incorrectly predicting earthquakes -- regardless of magnitude.

OTOH, there are several stories about herds of elephants heading to high ground well ahead of the awful tsunami that struck Thailand & Indonesia. I could imagine that elephant's ears, sensitive to low frequencies, combined with elephant brains might hear an approaching tsunami and freak-the-f**k-out (that's scientific terminology) and run uphill.

I remember thinking at the time that it must really be scarey as hell to sudenly see the water on the beach recede back nearly to the horizon.

PBS did a great documentary on Japanese scientists that were studying the behavior of fish prior to an earthquake and came up with some surprising results. The behavior did change noticable before the quake. They also did a study on cats surviving weeks in buildings without food and water after a quake- they did what's called "shutting down" which is a defense mechanism cats have when placed in danger. My feral cat did that when she had surgery...not fun.

The problem comes with the fish behavior that exhibits agitation from a variety of stimuli. The behavior is not earthquake-specific. We tend to discount false-positives and accentuate true-positives. It's human nature, and thus the need for a double blind test.

I believe there is somewhat of a "piezo electric" effect prior to an earthquake creating very low frequency electromagnetic waves. I wonder if this is what animals detect.

I also have often wondered if we have any perception of the electromagnetic changes that pass thoughout our bodys daily.

Folks have attempted to relate that effect to the Chinese concept of 'chi'. Also, Kirlian photography.

Peizoelectric -- that's an electric charged released by a compressed crystal upon release -- converting stored mechanical energy (compression) into a charge. If that's accurate, then I could imagine that a suddenly released deformation of the crust might result in a charge over the length of the fault. If an animal can detect it then surely instrumentation could. Working something like a theremin, perhaps?
