There's an article in my latest Scientific American that describes how butterfly wings produce colors like that. The electronics industry is re-creating that technology to create displays for handheld devices that actually look better and more brilliant in strong light.

I've seen paint that works like that. It's some sort of metalic stuff. Pretty cool effect, although I don't think I'd want my car painted that way.
