Volvo 242GT?

I'm looking at getting a '79 242 for my next car.

The one I'm looking at has 245K miles, Type R cluster, little rust (needs paint) 4 on the floor with electronic overdrive. Interior is less than perfect, just needs some cleaning, front seats have some tears.

Anyone else deal with these cars? This would be my first Brick - a perfect daily driver. (does it seem worth the $2800 asking price?)

Volvo

I personally would not spend that much money for this car. It needs a lot of sorting the painting alone will cost over $2,000 for a nice job not to mention the GT stripes that cars wears. With the rust paint issues and miles that is a $500 project car in my eyes, unless I'm missing something. The GTs are interesting cars. That car was the precruser to the 240 turbo's You can find nice ones of those for about the same price...again very nice cars and the turbo is addicting. Take what I say into prespective as I don't know where you live, what else is in your area nor have I seen the car in question. Also check: www.brickboard.com www.trubobricks.com IPDusa.com FcPgorton for parts. google them.

First of all I can tell you that the Volvo 240 series are uber-reliable... certainly more reliable than a MB of its age. It has a mechanically simple design. The suspension is heaven to work on. The chassis handles AMAZING when Bilstein HD's are mounted. Undoubtedly, a decent example of a GT is worth $2800, but it would have to be decent for me (read: very little rust and no serious accidents) .

It sounds more like a five hunderd dollar car than the twenty eight hundred dollar one to me too.

I sold one for my dad about ten years ago or so for about eleven hundred and it was probably in better condition than that. And nearly a hundred less thousand miles too.

yes; it's a 79 so it has the switch without the relay.

Owner is a volvo guy - knew a lot about the car. He's getting a compression test done soon (within the week) IPD cam and bigger TB installed.

A volvo with no Chassis rust is like gold up here. VERY hard to find, esp. one (of any vintage) under $5k. This is the only GT I've come across/Seen The Craigslist ad is here: http://detroit.craigslist.org/car/459471015.html

Probably not worth the $2895. Do you NEED a GT? If not, get a '83-'84 242 Intercooled Turbo... you'll be much happier with the boost!!!

I like the style.

I planed to b00st it anyways - along with a b23 swap. Again, any sort of Volvo is hard to come across around here.

I'll keep my eyes out.

No. Only the 4 cylinder 8 valve "Red blocks" are Non-interference.
Everything else, including the newer stuff and 16v B234 is interference.

Because they're real wagons with boxy bodies, enormous cargo areas and huge windows that allow great visibility. Unlike todays bizzarro-styled SUV-crossover vehicles with their sloping roofs and fat pillars that compromise cargo-room and create huge blind spots!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Don't buy rusty cars to drive, maybe for parts. They are really not very good parts cars either.
