I have always liked the Spanish made Astra 400, in 9mm Largo. A military issure weapon circa '40s and '50s.

What is 5.7 x 28 mm? Is that .22LR?

Its it's own distinct caliber. Designed by FN, only FN pistols and submachineguns use it. Fairly new and expensive to buy, but almost no recoil and very high penetration. Its equivalent to .224.

It came out in 94, and can reach velocities in excess of 2300 FPS

The FN Five-Seven is sick, but shooting it is probably very expensive. I bet that special ammo is pricey$$$$. Plus over penetration is probably a big problem.

If/when I do get one it will be the H&K. I really like German products!

I just had a long time friend give me one of these with the lazer site option. I thought it was pretty nice of him.

I shot one of those over the weekend,,, gives a pretty good kick being so light.

Yea, I actually shot it over the past week and it is a handful to control. I will have to say that I had a Glock 9mm a few years ago and it was easier to control/shoot. The S&W was free so what can I say

. I just need to shoot it more. I would like to eventually pick up another Glock.

The FN Hi-Power does have excellent build quality. I rarely see them in the shops anymore.

I have never seen a DA version though. I thought they were all SA.

Just to clarify, John Moses Browning did some really preliminary design work on what became the P.35 Hi-Power, but let's not forget that Browning died a long time before the Hi-Power design was finalized. I seem to recall that he died in 1926 and the P.35 was introduced in production in 1935. I read somewhere that a different designer actually thought of the double-stack magazine and some other features. So, as a marketing idea, claiming that the great man designed it is fine and dandy, but reality being what it is, he had relatively little to do with it. Neat weapon though, but I'm told that older P.35's don't like +P ammo, the frame tends to crack where the slide rides in it.

HK's are very nice but overpriced.
Glocks are great. Reliable and simple but I don't care for the grip angle, I always end up pointing high with them. The double trigger/no safety is no more dangerous than a revolver. Only an idiot would think so.
Smith&Wesson, don't really like their autos but have shot the M&P .45 and its quite nice.
Springfield XD series is VERY nice. I have shot several and likely will buy one in the near future.
Kahr makes some nice pieces, small, concealable and well made.
CZ75 is a great gun. I have one in 9mm and shoot it often. Never had a single problem with many, many rounds through it.

The question is what are you going to do with the gun? If you only shoot it at a range/target/etc. then conceal-ability, size, etc. don't mean much. A 1911 type .45 would be a great choice. I don't care for them in concealed carry duty. They take some training and regular practice to carry cocked-n-locked. A better choice for carry is a DAO, striker fired pistol like a Glock, etc. Simple, reliable, etc. Another choice is the old 5 or 6 shot snubbie revolver. Simple, reliable, etc. A Ruger SP101 loaded with .38 hollowpoints is hard to beat.

Caliber is a personal choice. Practice and good shooting skills mean far more. I prefer to practice with the caliber most often carried. 9mm is much cheaper to shoot if you shoot a lot and the hottest personal defense ammo has enough power.

I like the plastic grips mine came with. Drop it in the mud a few times and it will shoot for the next month or longer w/o cleaning. That design was copied in more than WON war.

Always wanted a John M. Browning "Colt" .45, but have small hands and cant get a good grip around it. The .40 is even worse.

I'm most accurate with my Browning .22 semi-auto; balance is perfect and it comes up on target fast and shoots faster. Sometimes makes me feel like I'd be better off throwing the Hi-Power at an an intruder; after I emptied it's 13 rounds of course. "Cocked and locked" you won't put one in your foot carrying it.....WON of my favorites.
