S&W makes nice wheel guns, but I have never been a fan of their autos. I detest the double action/single action, I like to have consistency in trigger pull. The gun store guy is an idiot as far as what he said about Glocks. I carry a Glock for duty (both Detectives and SWAT) and I shoot ALOT. I have only once had an issue with a retaining pin breaking, and the gun would still fire, it just had a really heavy trigger pull. Also, the only way you will shoot yourself in the foot is if you stick your stupid finger on the trigger when you shouldn't. If you practice proper firearms safety you will have no problems.

My Smith 357,,, see above,,, is my all time favorite weapon, but not exactly a good concealed carry gun. I had a Beretta auto 22 LR that seemed to work fairly well, but at the range the other day, I couldn't get more than 2 rounds out of it without jamming or non ejection problem. I like a nice light small auto for carry and our local sport shop reccommended a very small and light Kel-Tek 380 auto. He said he sell tons to law enforcement people and has not had one returned yet. I was skeptical but bought one and have put 50 rounds through it so far with NO issues. If it lives up to the dealers reccommendation, it will be a perfect carry weapon.

Thats what I was thinking. This is the same guy who tried to buy my grandfathers carbine off me for like $500.

Any input on the Glock 26? Seems like it's a nice little pistol.

Glocks are good guns. tell the gunstore idiot that revolvers don't really have safetys either and cops have carried them since the 1800s. .45ACP is a great round for self-defense, so is .40 S&W. Aa far as S&W autos, I am not a fan of those either, too complex. More of a fan of the 1911A1 style .45, but carrying one of those in condition one calls for some training. H&K and Sig are great guns, but you pay a lot for bragging rights when there are guns out there that get the job done cheaper.

Can't go wrong with a Glock. Every one I've fired feels like all the others of that make (very consistent) and most people I introduce to them can shoot one very accurately their first time. The .45 ACP Glock is (IMO) a little bulky in the grip for someone with small to mid-size hands. I love the .40 SW round for self-defense and would love to have the mid-size Glock (Model 23 I believe) in this caliber. The Model 26 is a little too small in the grip for my tastes but being a 9mm would still be controllable. If it fits the hand and can be shot with consistency and confidence it's a great gun.
With the praise to Glock still ringing, I have to add that I have a S&W Model 3914 in 9mm that is a joy to shoot and is small enough that it carries well. When I carry it's either that or the Glock 17. I also have pistols by Colt, Ruger and Browning and I love them all but my vote for all around dependability, shootability and accuracy goes to the Glock.
Above all, get a gun you can handle well and practice regularly.

I was thinking something like a Glock 26 would be better for conceled carry, which he is considering getting his permit for. The Glock 26 is nice and small, and I thought Glocks were bullit proof. But the gun store owner said Glocks have a very light triggar and poorly designed safety. So you can shoot yourself in the foot real easy, like the DEA agent on Youtube.

He also wants a .45 insted of the 9mm. Which I guess is the never ending debate... He wants the .45 because its more powerfull, might as well bring the largest cannon to the fight you can. So I suggested the .50AE Desert Eagle.

The store owner did say that H&K and Sig are the best of the best, just expensive. When I get a pistol I'm getting the H&K because I like buying German. They had an H&K Socom with the silencer there, Hattie wants! What do you need to do to get a silencer? I was told just pay a tax? The laser is a nice touch, but sadly extra.

I owned a H&K USP 45 back in the mid-Nineties. Very nice, well-built and a nice shooter. I also had the Sig Sauer P-220, which I wish I still had. Both are physically large pistols, which worked for me as I have big paws.

My philosophy on purchases like this is to buy the best that you can't afford.

I have an Ultra 10 in .45.

I wonder if the point you were trying to make "peneterated"?

I recognized that one in spell checker too, but didn't want to piss anyone off by going overboard

Hattie,

I'd also like to point out that you frequently type "currant" which is a fruit, instead of current.

Hattie, don't let the grammar and spelling nazis get you down. I'm a big fan of illiteracy.

I like my Ruger better than the Glock I had a chance to fire a few times. I also like it better than a Taurus. I did like the Sig though.

Blech

The Germans and Swiss are too expensive. For my beers and chocolate, I always preferred the Belgians. Make that for semi automatic pistols too.

The FN Hi Power is avaliable in 9mm or 40 SW, in the 9mm variation has a 13 round magazine, can be had in DA or SA, and was designed by the late great John Browning. Perfect melding of American no frills with European quality. As soon as I get my handgun licensce, this is what I will be getting.

Having shot one, it was one of the most easily controllable, easy to handle pistols I have shot. And the aesthetics are very appealing, at least to me. And it has a long history, dating back to 1935. All good things in my book.

I always thought that the Hi-Power was a very elegant pistol, particularly with a pair of wooden grips.

Heh

Tell him to get the FN Five-Seven. 5.7x28MM high velocity ammo, same as used in the P90. Designed to pierce armored helmet at 200 meters. 20 round ammo capacity, extremely low recoil. An ugly duckling for me, but if I needed one for serious tactical use, I'd want all three of those attributes: high capacity, high penetration, low recoil.
