And I know the period you are thinking about!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2q1hmlxxsc "Trink, trunk, bruderlein trink" is one of the most famous German drinking songs there is. And yes, they would have played that when the OKW officers drank their bier!!!

Chris I think you need to look right here (for the Panzer music)!!!:
http://www.reichslieder.com/wwii_music.html Panzerwagen Lied, Moteren fur Vaterland, etc. Never forget the Prinz Eugen Marsch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KP-CnfDi8iw And tomorrow, (I have tried to keep up with Germans and their bier, and you can't do it!! - I don't recommend it) You need to check this forum tomorrow, if you head doesn't hurt too much from the night before. One of the best places I have seen for this information/discussion http://forum.axishistory.com/

Panzers were nice...
Until they met this guy...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsGet7trGOQ&feature=related ![]() And stood no chance against this guy ![]() And the Russkies weren't little girls; they put diesels in their tanks, not "whimpy" Maybach V12's

Its still Soviet junk!
The Panther could knock one out, I imagin a Panzer 4 would have one hell of a time. Or you could do what Rommel did during the battle of France when the French actualy counter attacked his 7th Panzer division with a significant tank force. Line up the 88's and let them rip! This was one of the events that built Rommel's legend, him and his staff fired 88's. ![]()

Heh
When the Panther was actually running
![]() I am biased; I love all the Soviet armor, from T34's to T72's. For German tanks....only a Tiger I will suffice. Sit back, reach out and touch someone. I also like the ingenious "smoke screen" mechanism on later Soviet tanks. No canisters or any of that bs...just inject diesel fuel in the exhaust. They all burnt oil too, and carried a huge resevoir. Those Russkies make efficient, if unrefined equipment. The 88 was a devastating and efficient multipurpose weapon. One of my favorite German weapons of WWII. Other than the Nebelwerfer batteries or the huge siege cannons. I like all the silly unecessary German weapons. The StG 44 that fired around corners, for example

![]() Yeah they built a lot of useless things. I remember when they were advancing in Russia they called off the JU87's and wheeled one of these up. Totaly pointless, but very cool.

From what I have read, my impression is that the T-34 was the most versatile and reliable tank there was in the war. They made a helluva LOT of them, too.
(After Kursk in '43 the writing was on the wall. Germany was going to lose on the Eastern front). And let's not even think about the shortages of Diesel, petrol and Avgas. By '45 most of the new ME262s had no fuel and lots of them simply got blown up on the airfields. The Shermans were junk by comparison, and the Konigstigers, Ferdinands and Elefants were too god damned big.

I don't care, Soviet junk is just that! They needed numbers!
I was just reading a very interesting passage where Guderian had an "I told you so" moment with Hitler. Guderian put Russia's tank numbers at 10,000 back in the late 30's. Hitler thought he was full of it, well in October of 41 Hitler said "If I had known they had that many damn tanks I wouldn't have invaded." No the writing was on the wall long before Kursk, Kursk was a horrible waste of good men and tanks. Just a lot of people didn't want to admit it. They lost their last chance in the winter of 41/42. The more sensable commanders saw this and wanted to pull back to defensable positions in Russia and sue for peace.

I think actually it was in the winter '42- '43, when it was over. Stalingrad and von Paulus' 6th armee showed the end.
Some people think they should have driven to Moscow and captured it. But AH wanted to go south to the Don and the Caucausus (sp?) and try to grab all the manganese, oil fields etc. I would really like to drink bier with you in Conn one day (or Calif if you ever came there) and discuss some of this with you. You are really up on it, a lot more than me, and this stuff fascinates me. The Eastern front was totally under reported in the west, and in sums, men and materiel spent, and in suffering, it dwarfs the Western front by far. Russia was, in the end, just too god damned big. It goes all the way to Vladivostok and the Pacific, too much to occupy and hold, the supply lines alone couldn't take it. They couldn't even take Leningrad after over 900 days of siege. Maybe AH would have stopped marching east, then sued for peace when he had enough lebenstraum, who knows?

What a bizzarre thread. I guess only on a forum where diehard Mercedes Diesel nuts congregate could it be introduced without any selfconsciousness. And the most amazing thing is it almost seems normal!
There has never IMHO been a better march composed than Preussens Gloria... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_D1mYBBHgM&feature=related I have a large collection of German military music. I generally source my CD's here... http://www.brandenburghistorica.com - Peter.
