STOP Global Cooling!!!

“Certain signs, some of them visible to the layman as well as the scientist, indicate that we have been watching an ice age approach for some time without realizing what we are seeing. Scientists predict that it will cause great snows which the world has not seen since the last ice age thousands of years ago.”

I posted about global cooling in one of the threads about global warming. The irony (?) of it is that global cooling means global warming is actually much worse than we think.

I found it interesting that, even though the direction was opposite, the fearmongering was basically the same as it is now.

What is interesting is that with the SMALL amount or accurate data available how can anybody predict what is going to happen? The earth is naturally a much hotter planet than it has been for the past couple hundred thousand years and I think it is extreme hubris for man to think he can alter the climate in a meaningful way. If you look at what was recorded and later verified through carbon dating, etc. you can see that the period leading up to say 1600 was warmer than it is now and that temperatures went down from the 1600's through the 1800's. I doubt it was heavy industry that caused temperatures to climb during the late middle ages and that a Renaissance version of the Kyoto caused them to fall...

Truth is NOBODY knows what will happen next and everyone from Al Gore on down should admit this and not try to stifle debate on the subject. Me? I'm buying an orange grove in West Virginia

I find it interesting that scientists can revise their theories when new information becomes available.

What's so similar about the "fearmongering?" This time, we're being asked to conserve. Then, we were conserving for a different reason. Or maybe it's the same reason, and completely unrelated to global warming or cooling.

A few days ago, I was driving down the road, with the A/C on, and the windows open.
Did I contribute to global cooling? Gosh...I'd feel bad if I did.....Maybe I could turn on the heater and open the windows to balance things out?

Nah,

All you did was counteract 10% of Al Gore's hot air!

Actually he has been banned from going to Greenland as the last time he was there the glaciers melted by 100feet

Tell it to the people in the Maldives Islands. Over the last twenty year the water level has risen three feet.

How do we know the Islands didn't slowly sink over the last 20 years? Islanders eating fast food, gaining weight, buying large cars, building larger homes...all that weight, pushing down on the dirt, compacting the soil ...put two and two together.

Perhaps it's not Island fast food....perhaps it's all the powerboats, churning the sea with their steel props, aerating the water.....all those little bubbles take up space....voila, the sea level rises!

Sheesh...this isn't Rocketsciencestery

Estimating future sea level changes from past records
Nils-Axel Mo¨rner*
Paleogeophysics and Geodynamics, Stockholm University, S-10691 Stockholm, Sweden
Received 13 November 2001; accepted 7 May 2003

Abstract: The Maldives like other low-lying areas have been condemned by IPCC to become flooded in 50-100 years. The INQUA Commission on Sea Level Changes and Coastal Evolution (the international organisation that hosts the true world specialists on sea level changes) have studied the actual sea level changes in the Maldives and hope to be able to extend the studies to other parts of SE Asia. Our findings reveal that there is no reality behind the scenario of a recent future flooding. The sea level has not been rising in the Maldives in the last centuries and at around 1970 it even experienced a significant lowering. The models of IPCC are simply over-ruled by the theory and observation by sea level specialists within INQUA. We should all be happy about this, one would assume. This is not the case, however. The government of the Maldives has put much prestige in the fear of a future flooding, accusing the west of having caused this situation and demanding them to pay for it. Without a flooding scenario, they now fear that international aid might be cancelled. In this situation, our scientific studies in the Maldives are regarded as anti-governmental and we are now working under very complicated conditions. For the people of the Maldives it is a great relief not to live under a constant threat that all will be gone in one or two generations. For science it is necessary to be able to go on recording the true story and not having to rely on absurd models not anchored in field observations. For a poor country like the Maldives they should always be entitled to become assisted by countries in the west. Furthermore, a coastal like the Maldives is always threatened by coastal events (storms, hurricanes, tsunamis, etc) that may have disastrous effects on a short-term scale. References: Mörner, N.-A. in Integrated Coastal Zone Management , Launch Ed., 17-20 and Second Ed., 33-37 (IPC Publ. Ltd, 2000).

Quit being silly. All of you.

Use your heads.

Ultimately, it boils down to sustainability: can we (the [ab]users of this fair planet) continue what we are doing, indefinitely?

If you answer yes, you haven't used your head.

We overfish the seas.
We clear-cut the rainforests.
We ship more doodads and widgets across the entire planet than we could ever need.
We bicker and fight over oil...but instead why not use all that effort to collectively solve our problems?

I don't care who you are. At least think of the consequences to your actions. Where will humanity (and the state of this planet) be in 10 years? 20 years? 50 years?

Hmmmm, a thread about global warming/cooling becomes about oil and fishing. Come on Nate, stay on subject.Admit that there is no proof of global warming/cooling or anything and we can all move onto talk about tuna boats...

Although I think that even if we keep up as we are it won't make a difference in 50 years. Maybe 2-300 years if we keep going as we are, but by then we will hopefully be using bio fuels and nuclear power for our electricity and transportation. At the rate we are building new nuclear power plants and bio refineries it will take 300 years before they can take the place of petroleum.
