Oxidized electronics?
I have a stereo that hasn't been used much in the last few years. I believe the electronics have become oxidized. Anybody know how to fix that?

No, it's just been sitting around unused for years . . .

I am confused by your use of the term "oxidized".
Disuse of electrical components does not fall prey to oxidation...environmental exposure does. Has the component in question been sitting in a damp cellar, outdoors, or perhaps, a very dusty attic? Otherwise, what you are likely to experience, are intermittent operation of certain switches and knobs...like "crackling", when you twist the volume control. Electrical contact cleaner (available at Radio Shack or other electronics parts stores) can remedy this. Comes in a aerosol can with a thin plastic tube attached to the nozzle to aim at small areas.

These components have been sitting in my basement, but it's not damp at all down there. The crackling you described is what I'm getting. Someone gave me an aerosol can of something like what you described. I don't have any instructions of what to do with it, though. Do you just spray it over the whole board? If I aim it at small areas, I wouldn't know which areas to spray.

Turn the knobs and see what moves inside the stereo. Spray cleaner inside whatever moves. Make sure spray gets inside, not just outside!

Thanks, John. That's helpful. It looks like I'll have to do more than just remove the covers. It makes me nervous disassembling stuff like that too much. . . .

Most equipment cases are held in place with as little as 4 screws and perhaps up to eight. Not a big deal to access the affected controls once the case is removed.
As long as you don't have the unit PLUGGED IN, you can spray away at all the little doohickies without fear! Just beware of trying to tap into the female components...they are more complicated than the male counterparts!!!
