I will be visiting New Orleans in a few weeks and would like names and addresses of good places to eat which aren't too expensive. Would love to eat at places like Commanders Palace but we are traveling in a group on business and that would be too expensive.
To anyone that can help thanks alot.

I have family in New Orleans...sadly, I buried my grandparents months apart in the last few months.

The best fares aren't on Canal Street, near the "Quarters" or at the "Marina", but off I-610 around Franklin and Elysian Fields.

This is where the REAL cookin gets done...also inexpensive.

Unfortunately, they are in areas that are simultaneously undergoing a restoration while also blighted.

Considering the bad press New Orleans is getting as of late on having the hightest murder rate per capita, not a good idea to venture too far from the district.

Anywhere on the Quarters or along Canal street is going to be pricey...the tourist joints. Native eateries are being replaced by franchises (like Hard Rock Cafe).

I've dined in places at the Marina near the Gulf, but wasn't impressed. Touristy fare, again.

I know you don't want expensive, but if you can, get a table at Brennan's. They may still be a 5-star restaurant, and for good reason.

Again, the places I enjoyed the most were not in the most friendly areas...sorry.

If you like fish & seafood and have a rental car and time, drive up I-10 to I-55 and go to Middendorf's. Very good food at reasonable prices.

Crescent City Brewhouse is pretty good and the guys from Orange County Choppers ate there when they were in NO. Mulate's is good and very entertaining. Tujague's is good but a little more expensive then the others.

Used to be a place called the Baacanal, or something similar, in the old Playboy Club. Had pretty decent chow, but it wasn't a tourist trap way back when. For a little more blue collar, there was a great pool hall on the West Bank, somewhere right around hwy 23, called Hollywood. Super cold draught beer and regulation tables. And you haven't had Popeye's Chicken till you had it on their home turf, get the spicy with a side of dirty rice.

It may be touristy but you gotta get some bignettes and coffee at the Cafe Du Monde. It wouldn't be right if you went to the Big Easy and didn't have fresh bignettes. Used to be 3 for a dollar...

Well the French Quarter Fest starts 4/18 Click - Garden District has some excellent choices. Personal Favorite in the Business District across from Convention Center is Mullatees.

correctamundo!

walk across the street to central grocery, get the biggest Muffuletta Sandwich ever seen, grab a cold beer and set by the river eatin, then stroll back over to du monde for desert.

as g-benz said, with the exception of the big guys like brennans or commanders, best local flavor is small shops that constantly change faces and names.

oh, cresent city brewhouse mentioned above is not bad. good happy hour specials on oysters and drinks, and usually some pretty good jazz blowing. the atmoshpere is very good.

One little tip about New Orleans, make good note where you park your car. I've lost a couple there.

Honestly, in the morning you run into several others that share that very same problem.

ROFLMAO! I've done the same thing. Once I lost a car for three days and thought it had been towed. After calling NOPD and all of their tow lots for two days only to find that they never towed the car, we reported it stolen. Turns out that we were too drunk to remember where we parked it in the Quarter. We just happend to park in an area that doesn't get towed. What are the odds of that in NO?

After we found the car, we had to call off the NOPD....not that they were ever looking for the car! The NOPD told us that we had to track down a cop so he could do an inspection on the car and verify that I actually had the car and was the legal owner. Finally got that straight but it was a PITA!

The night we lost the car my drunk friend decided to wait on a park bench while I looked for my car. I looked for around an hour but never found the car. When I came back to get my friend, I noticed his shoes had been stolen off of his feet while he was passed-out. The bench was just about in front of the area where the Aquarium of the America's is now located. It was a very well lit area in the middle of downtown an not the kind of place you would think someone was going to rob you of your shoes. Huh, nope, this is NO and anything can happen. That was funny as hell walking up to find my friend had no shoes on his feet in the middle of Mardi Gras at 4:00 AM. Life sucked for him!

Anyway, enjoy New Orleans but don't drink too much because you never know what might happen to your shoes......or your car!

I have found that McDonalds and Burger King on Canal street charge the same as other McD and BK. BK had the $.49 $.99 and $1.49 cheesburgers last year when other BK's did. Usually in city downtown areas the prices are higher.

Prices in other restaurants are outrageous.

I lived in NOLA for about a year. There was one really good place I used to go to eat that was outside the city by a lake. I can't remember the name of it, but it has since been destroyed by a hurricane. I was also destroyed by a hurricane, and don't remember much of my brief existence there.

OK funny story about NOLA along the car being towed line.
Before we headed off to the airport in the rental we wanted to get coffe and bignettes at Cafe Du Monde early sturday morning. So we parked on the same street (I did not see a tow-away sign). After coffee went to get the car and it was gone with our luggage in the back. Called the cops they suggested we check with towing yard. They said they have the car. Got into a taxi (~$15) went to the tow yard. Paid the fine and towing charge alltogether ~ $100 (they accept AMEX for my convenience). drove to the airport, droped off the car, got to the gate. We made it in time for our flight but the sign said the flight is cancelled. They put us on an alternate airline. We finally made home in one peice with our luggage. That was some morning. Towing in NOLA is a racket. Now when I drive into French Quarter I park at parking lots for a fee, I do not care if there is parking space on the street. Also I second the Mufalata suggestion.
