Aggressive Driving
What do you think is the main cause of aggressive driving?
I read an article that said the average aggressive driver is a lower income male, with little education. Do you agree with this? |

I have lots of education.
![]() I think it just has a lot to do with testosterone and male urges which seldom get a chance to be acted out in polite society. We have urges to smash somebody but instead we just cut them off in traffic. Tom W

Testosterone? I beg to differ. There are women aggressive drivers, too. I think we live in a very stressful atmosphere and it sometimes shows in the way we drive. I think it's displaced or misplaced anger. I also don't believe it has anything to do with socio-economic or education levels.

I agree 100% I have seen many more women drive aggressively than male drivers. I think they do it because they are trying to 'out male' male drivers to show that they are just as good. I also blame two factors... seat belts air bags Most people now think they will walk away from any accident so they do not care how they drive. If you look at how 'safety' is selling cars these days, you would think that you could survive a head-on with a Sherman tank and not get hurt. no consequences=no control By Aggressive driving here I mean the normal 'Mario Andretti" lane changes, cutting people off, etc. I do not mean shooting each other with Mac-10's That is a whole 'nother story...

Agressive behavior has a lot to do with emotional self-control. I know of highly respected surgeons who have behaved in very childish ways in the operating room because they didn't control their tempers. They were rich, powerful, extremely well-educated, etc. etc.
It was emotional self-control, or the lack of it, that was the issue.

Simply put, I think it is fear that is causing aggressive driving. Fear is one hell of a motivator. Maybe even more of a motivator than sex. We are told over and over again by the TV, magazines, newspapers how afraid we should be. And people start to believe it. If they don't wear XYZ companies underarm deodorant they will never get to have sex with the girl down the street. If you don't buy a Lexus SUV your kids will die in a car crash. On Star is the only thing separating you from death in an auto accident. So people go out and buy all of this stuff to placate the fears that have been instilled in them by the companies that produce this stuff. They buy all this stuff on credit and the real fear sets in when the credit card bill comes in at the end of the month. So they have to go buy more stuff to make themselves feel safer, better. And dam sure don't get in between them and the stuff they need, or you will get run over. Just my $0.02 ![]() RichC .

I think cars allow us to compensate for things we lack physically and mentally. Any person, male or female can surround themselves with a box that gives them a degree of anonimity and renders them with "super powers" in relation to their own human body. In fact, it's interesting, I see disabled/handicapped drivers driving agressively the majority of the time. Not necissarily the seniors with wheelchair tags but the younger para/quads to whom a vehicle gives the same powers as everyone else. It's like they're acting out their reduced mobility frustrations which I guess is understandable.
The roads are "battle zones" where people may act on things that go through their minds that they would never consider doing in person.

I agree with the original statement. I first noticed long ago that the cars in the biggest hurry always seemed to be other than those driven by folks higher on the economic ladder. How often do you see a new Benz, BMW, or Lexus driven in an offensive manner? How often do you see a pickup truck or a Cavalier driven that way? What are the demographics of the buyers of Benz/BMW/Lexus vs. pickups and Cavaliers?
