wagonmaster.com interesting business idea.
Always thought these were interesting for what they were, but how does he find so many with so low of milage. Also, how is there so many poeple who are willing to pay so much for 20 year old SUV. Heck with gas prices how does he sell any.
Thought that this would be an interesting thing to do with old Volvos. Anyway interesting business idea...just not sure how's he's pulling it off today. http://wagonmaster.com/complete.htm |

I think this would be a great business idea for 240 Volvos.

A friend of mine drove one in high school. The ultimate prepster-mobile. iirc, it was a huge gas hog and very prone to rust. Fun to drive though. It felt like it had good pick-up, but was slow compared to most other vehicles in the late 1980's.

I'm not sure on your local climate, but Oregon seems like a bad place to find low mileage pristine vintage cars.
There are some people dealing vintage diesel Mercedes in SO cal, they have a very nice setup. http://jgsmercedes.com/Hello.html Most of the dealers, including Wagonmaster, are in warmer climated areas. Wagonmaster's headquarters are in Texas, and close to 3 major cities. I'd imagine that Wagoneers were very popular to Texans in the 1980s as well. Florida seems to be another hotspot for low mileage cars, probably because the retirement capitol has alot of old farts that buy high end cars, keep them meticulously maintained, and rarely drive them. I've also toyed with the idea, but I'm on the Southern end of the rust belt. I would anticipate taking many trips to Texas, NM, AZ, and FL to find cars. *edit* This is another company I've worked with. My dad bought a '78 TA from the years ago. Located in Cleveland, bucks my climate theory, but they mostly do restorations. http://www.taspecialties.com/taspecbuy.htm The volvo 240 is a great platform to do this. With a long production period and popular sales at the time, there should be many out there. I'm not sure about 240s rivaling the cult status of a Wagoneer or W123 diesel, imo, though it could work. My local volvo dealership has 3 240s on the lot, ranging from 70-150k on the odometer, and are trying to get North of 7gs for each of them!

*Edit* These guys are doing it right, offering a full refund until production begins. Preselling makes me very nervous now. My dad lost his deposit on a GT500 Eleanor ragtop when a company similar to unique performance tanked. Shortly after, Unique fell apart as well. http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071129/FREE/71129006/1530/FREE Title wasing as well. http://jalopnik.com/cars/breaking-news/oh-no-eleanor-unique-performance-accused-of-title-washing-319267.php They had Carol Shelby and Chip Foose as backers, hundreds of thousands of dollars in deposits from eager buyers and somehow managed to tank. Obviously the operation was run by crooks who embezzled the money. They could have had a runaway hit and made millions, but greed ruined the operation, and tainted the reputations of 2 Amercian legends. My dad still has his title to a 1968 Shelby GT500 in Nebraska. He did all of his homework before putting the money down, including references from customers and local banks. The owner did get arrested and we may travel some time to pick the Mustang if ther is one, no doubt requiring a flatbed.
