Yeah.

I have been slacking on my exercise. Now with my new hip my hernia repaired and knee cleaned out I will be running marathons in no time. (NOT)

But being comfortable in doing physical things is a big plus.

Glad it went well

Tom,

I had mine done about 3 years ago and it has been great. I think I took one pain pill the first night then only a few aspirin. Ice was a big help for the first few days. Recovery was pretty quick. It has certainly helped the swelling I used to get with any lifting.

Hope all continues well for you.

Chuck

Both my medial and lateral meniscuses were torn in my right knee during a football game in '72...and I didn't have the surgery 'til '96.

All that while, doctors said "Nothing can be done that won't fail within a year or two..."

All the while, I'm seeing REAL football players getting back on the field (although, at reduced capacity) and playing again after surgery. WTH?

Had the surgery done...my knee doesn't/hasn't "popped out of joint" since the surgery! WHAT A RELIEF!

The only downside?

The doctor got in there and found the ACL was torn. His comment was something like, "It looked like an old tear due to the fraying at the end of the tear itself..." He mentioned that he decided NOT to reattach the ACL due to the fact that recovery was expected to be around one year. His OTHER comment (more hillarious) was the "God gave you spare parts to use in place of the ACL...it's your hamstrings..." Then he gave me the exercise to do to strengthen the hammies....

GOD - I HATE HAMSTRINGS!!! (Mine ALWAYS want to curl up and cramp!) But, I digress...

Instead, trimming up the menisci only resulted in minimal discomfort (regular aspirin/Tylenol) and reduced loading on the knee (crutches/cane) for about 6 weeks.

I wonder if the surgery treatment has progressed even more so since '96?

If so Tom, you'll be runnin' with the best of 'em in no time at all...

IRONMAN, anyone?

Do you have a vehicle to run? I'd love to do a "Dukes of Hazzard" style dirt road race.
I have been autocrossing my 84 280e. it has h and r lowering springs bilstein hd in front and konis in back. I have a newly built up Limited slip to install in the back and new slicks for the season. I also have a sport seat and some other goodies to install to lower weight. I also plan to move the battery to the trunk for better weight distribution. I have a front sway bar from a 107 which I hope to install to increase roll resistance, but that will have to be "engineered"....in my case jerry rigged might be more accurate.

I run SCCA in ESP against mostly newer modified mustangs camaros and firebirds. I usually beat some and get beat by some. I always imagine the puzzlement of a ground pounding mustang driver when they get beat by a four door taxi looking thing driven by a stout grandpa!

I always am going for the "fastest car with four doors" unofficial catagory.

I have a good time.

I cannot wait to get the LSD installed.

Tom:

Do you do the "June Sprints" at "Road America" up here at Elkhart Lake, WI.?

If so, I'd like to see you run if you're in the neighborhood!

Road america is for road racing. Although I think my car might be competetive in some historic class there that type of racing will cost probably in the vicinity of $1,000 for a weekend if you don't break anything or crash.

My little autocrossing adventures will cost me about that much for a season.

A few years back I went up to a spring historic event. That was as much fun as any automotive event i have ever attended. Lots of older cars and a paddock full of enthusiasts who just want to talk about their cars with you. Literally hundreds of cars from formula v up to a 1967 ford gt complete with a side oiler 427 with two 800 cfm holleys (or so).

A wonderful track and wonderful racing.

The class with the old trans am mustangs and camaros was the most hotly contested class with a half a dozen cars just really getting after it.

If I had more money to play with I would love to do historic racing for a season.

Think mercedesshop would consider a sponsorship?

The knee has been pretty much pain free today. I took two half pain pills yesterday just because the nurse insisted I would be needing it today. Bah!

The only reminder today has been the wrap that I have on it. If not for that I would be operating 100% normal.

I have cold packed it twice I think and am going to go do it now even though it seems unneccessary.

Yesterday I nearly got in a fight with the Mrs. because I wanted to drive home. She won just because I didn't want to vex her. We went and got it today (my car...the 240/300 stick). I had to be careful getting in and was a little careful pushing in the clutch (left knee surgery), but hey, no problemo!

Cheerio!

I've 3 arthroscopies, 2 on one knee and one on the other all in about 3 years time, last one being done 7 years ago. Problem I have is that I keep re-tearing my menisci. Both of my knees are "ready" for more and I've simply refused. I do nothing strenuous with my knees yet I keep re-tearing the cartilage. The problem is the the meniscus does not grow and during the arthroscopic surgery all the doctors do is trim away the damaged tissue so every time there is less tissue left. In my opinion the more they trim the less tissue is left leaving the meniscus more vulnerable to future tearing. My orthopedic specialist did not disagree with me and in fact agreed with my opinion. I just deal with the pain and swelling when it flares up.
Tom, I hope the best for you.

Yeah, I understand. I imagine eventually I will be getting a whole new knee. I will just keep going as long as I can with what I have left.

That's what I'm personally trying to avoid. My doctor told me a knee replacement wouldn't be out the question if enough menisectomies were to be performed on me.
I feel what you are born with is better than any medical device that has so far been invented.

Thanks for the offer.

I either overdid it yesterday or it took 30 hours for the novacane to wear off. Along about evening it started stiffening up and this morning was pretty painful....enough that I took half of one of those fancy prescription pain pills.

I'm gonna go ice it here in a little while.
