George bush has been compared to a chimp for the past 8 years. So, in fairness, we (Obama supporters) should just fall on a grenade on this. It will go away.

Was curious George a chimp or a monkey?

It hardly matters. The real dope is the bar owner who made the shirt.

But I am so glad the country is being forced to see and confront it, and not pretend it away as usual.

Poor George. Degraded like that

It is a good thing they didn't turn him over to me. I'd make him wear that Tshirt, but strip him naked of EVERYTHING else, then toss him in the back of a military C130, fly him out to Oakland, California.

Then drop him off at East 14th and 98th Avenue at midnight with no references.

I'd so buy one! GWB has been trashed and compared to everything under the sun.

Thats good old fashion brutal American politic's. If Obama can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen!

Its only racist because he is black, Hillary has been compared to a lot of cartoon characters and no one gives a damn.

BTW I will keep a close eye on this thread.

POS 05-15-2008 12:03 AM

He's free to make whatever shirt he wants, they're free to stand outside his business and protest. I don't agree with his shirt, and I don't agree with their protests. There ya go.

davidmash 05-15-2008 12:14 AM

Sorry Hat but I disagree. I am jewish. Making a joke about me being 'cheap' is going to be interpreted quite differently than a joke about you being 'cheap'. It is different and you know it.

Blacks in this nation have endured centuries of degradation. They were compared to the ape family as I recall (and not in a favorable way). Make fun of his speech patterns, his ears or what ever. Comparing him to a monkey is like putting his likeness on a Union Jack or a white robe. There are certain lines that should not be crossed and that racist crossed it with both feet.

Having said that, it is a free country and everyone has the right to show the world what kind of person they are. That bar own just put is character on display for the world to see. Racist white trash still exists in the the USA.

Hatterasguy 05-15-2008 12:16 AM

I don't know my Jewish friends crack some pretty racist Jewish jokes with me. Maybe its because we know eachother so well we know its all in good fun.

I do see your point, and most likely that was the bar owners intent. However its a free country. The protesters got their say, he got his say, and thats that.

I'm an old school Yankee and depending on who you ask WASP'ish. So the cheap jokes strike close to home!:D I'm so offended! We Yankee's are not CHEAP, we just don't like spending money thats all!!!

Until that post about your history prof tracing his ancestry back to the Mayflower, I had always thought you were an Italian-American, then you told us your family had been over here since the early 1700s and had settled part of Mass. It's great to know so much about your history.

Good priorities; works for me.:D

I prefer the term frugal.;)

G-Benz 05-15-2008 07:22 AM

Perhaps, (as he said in the interview) that he saw the resemblance between curious George and Obama and never meant for it to be a racist intent...

...he seems old enough to have been around to know about the racist ape references to blacks, so I don't buy that one.

And if he is an ultra conservative, why would he make t-shirts promoting an opponent candidate, unless his intent was to demean the opponent in some manner?

Sorry, his version of the story doesn't hold water...

The shirt was obviously in poor taste.

Since when are Americans not allowed to have poor taste?

Fact is, the current president has been displayed as a chimp on this very forum, probably by some of the very members complaining about the Obomma chimp caracature. I didn;t see Obomma complaining when the same tactic was used against Bush. Why are Dimmercrats surprised when their own tactics are turned against them??

You are wrong, Hatt.

It’s not good old fashion brutal American politics at all.

It’s good old fashion brutal American racism. And there’s nothing “good” about it.

Stick with keeping a close eye on the thread.
Beyond that, you may have missed the boat on this one.

WVOtoGO 05-15-2008 10:06 AM

Geezzz….Get off your political high horse.

Fact is, this isn’t about politics and/or the “dimmercrats”.

It’s about a racist t-shirt.

Sure, we’re allowed to have poor taste.
Sure, we’re allowed freedom of speech and personal expression.

And with that said; I guess then we can all run around calling every African American we see a chimp, ape, spook, n*g**r. Whatever. And I guess that would be allowed.

Fact is, “Allowed”, and “Right” are two different things.
Some here, need to start learning the difference.

No complaints here...offensive or not, don't deny the intent. Portraying Bush as a chimp is intended to be offensive. Doing the same for Obama gets the same effect, but with the added tone of racism due to the association of apes to blacks hailing from the early era of this noble country's history.

The point is, the shirt was meant to illicit a chuckle from the Obama opposition, or a snarl from supporters. We all get that. What I don't buy is that he plays ignorant with regards to how chose to bring about his intended effect...

The difference between calling Obama a chimp
and calling Bush a chimp is enormous.

One is a racial slur.
The other is not.

You would need to put a picture of a slave owner on a shirt
with a bush slogan to have the same racial schism.

It is not about the chimp.
It is about the racism that is still rampant in the US.

"Brutal American Racism"!!!???? Sorry, but that is an inaccurate, inciting description of this matter, in my opinion. My wife commented that Obama looked cute like Curious George two years ago, way before Geraldine Ferraro did. And she is far from being a WASP, and doesn't have a racist bone in her body--FAR to the contrary.

Mistress 05-15-2008 10:48 AM

I'm alittle confused here- they did the very same thing with Dubya on the last election and no one was whining back then. They did a whole Curious George cartoon thing with him.

Dee8go 05-15-2008 10:49 AM

Well, Dubya is a cracker . . . oops!

Gurkha 05-15-2008 10:57 AM

Bad as it sounds, it just bought Obama some more votes and free publicity.

I've seen brutal American racism in person in the form of a 19 yo black boy hanging from a noose in his grandfather's carport, because he was dating a white girl. You want to compare a god damn tee shirt to that as being in the same league, fine....you go with that:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Stir it up and leave--yep, sounds like I got the gender right.

WVOtoGO 05-15-2008 11:13 AM

I was using it as a quote from what was previously stated. I guess you missed that.

You can define “Brutal” with any example of your personal experiences you want.

As far as I’m concerned, any level of racism is “Brutal”.

That is what I’m going with.

If you believe that there is some gray zone in racism, where one side is acceptable and the other is seen in a brutal killing, then I have nothing more to say to you.
As Trakehner so nicely put it: "Have a nice day"

I am sick of racism being brought into this horse race by so many apparently guilt ridden lilly white crackers. It is unnecessary and racist per se. My black associates and friends are sick of it too. And I'm not one of those guys who always talks about having black friends only when this subject comes up, I'm a plaintiff's lawyer with a large percentage of black clients and associate counsels before that accusation gets tossed about.
